go back into the game, stealing the ball off Dominic and racing to the end of the hall where I leap imo the air, flawlessly dunking the ball through the hoop. I had renewed energy. I knew who my mate was; now I just needed her to come to the same conclusion. She must have felt the same as I did, when we had kissed, because why else would she say she was afraid of feeling anything
greater? It terrified her and I couldn’t blame her, it had taken me by surprise too.
I get back to the room around nine o’clock. Ollie didn’t usually let us shoot hoops for that long but perhaps he could tell that I really needed it.
“Right. You’ve let off steam in the gym where your gymphobic sister actually came in to find you and you’ve also played some ball. It’s time to tell me exactly what happened,” he says bluntly as he shuts the door. I kick my trainers off and peel my damp t-shirt off, throwing it in the corner. I ignore him for a moment and wander through into the bedroom and fling myself face down onto my bed. Ollie dutifully follows.
“Aus, what’s going on? I’ve never seen you that intense with a workout before. I was actually proud, don’t get me wrong, but what happened on your date?” he asks. I look up at him and shrug.
“It has been one of the best days of my life but conversely, also the worst,” I admit with a frown.
Ollie looks confused.
“Okay. I’m gonna need more information,” he says, sitting down.
I sit up and consider him for a moment.
“That depends Ol, are you going to tell me I’m crazy, like my own sister did earlier?”
“Yeah she didn’t look too happy when she left. Don’t get me wrong, as alphas come, you are in a we
ird league of your own, but you’re not crazy. Just tell me,” Ollie replies kindly.
“The date went great. The food was awesome as always and then we went for a walk. I took her to
one of my favourite spots and…well, I kissed her,” I reply, a smile spreading across my face as I remembered how amazing it felt to do so.
“It was so great. Intense, and honestly I just felt… euphoric. It was nothing like it was with Ava, and she was definitely into it too,” I begin again, my smile now fading, “but she suddenly burst into tears and asked me to take us back here. She couldn’t get out of the car fast enough and at first I thought I’d done something really wrong. But then she tells me it was perfect and implies that what she felt today was so great that she was afraid of feeling anything more for me and getting her heart crushed whenever I found my mate in the near future. I haven’t seen her since.”

Gloom and Thunder Part 3
Ollie lets out a long whistle.
“Girls are seriously bizarre, I’m telling you. This is why I enjoy a good fuck in a cupboard and I don’t date,” Ollie says candidly. I laugh lightly and nod.
“The ironic thing about it all, though? She would never get her heart crushed,” I say with a determined look on my face, “because she had nothing to be afraid of. She is never going to lose me…because, Ol…I am ninety-nine percent sure Ella is my mate.”
I look at Ollie’s face for his immediate reaction.
“It’s an interesting idea Aus. It has been strang. You’ve been strangely transfixed on this random seemingly human girl amongst all the others. But we don’t even know what she is,” he says
tentatively.
“I know. I really think Atlas does know, but he won’t tell me. I don’t know why. I have no idea what to do from here,” I admit, looking at him imploringly. This was definitely a time for some beta counsel
“Okay…” he says, clearly in thought, “give her space. She’s clearly hurt and confused and girls don’t think logically at the best of times so even less when they’re like that. If you’re right, she wouldn’t have a clue about any of it. From her perspective she can’t even be bonded to you so the thought probably wouldn’t even cross her mind. She’s got no mated friends to tell her what it’s like, either. But from what I’ve heard, even when we bond with people from other species it still becomes totall y undeniable. IF she is your mate, by the time you, as an alpha in particular, have come of age, she definitely won’t be able to stay away from you. It would be like a gravitational pull…”
I frown, I didn’t want to stay away from her. Right now, all I wanted more than anything is to bury my face into her neck and smell her once again. I wanted to kiss her until she was breathless. That
seemed so obvious now too, that her scent was so strong and so alluring to me, particularly on the
marking spot, no less. The more I thought about it, the more I just knew in every molecule of my
body that she was meant for me and Atlas; and I was meant for her. Only her.
“That’s going to be quite challenging, but…in case I’m somehow wrong I don’t want her to feel any
worse about today,” I reply with a gulp. I felt hopeful, but also largely defeated, it was a strange
combination. I’d tasted her, now…and I was absolutely hooked.
“Back on schedule tomorrow though, I’m afraid. Your dad has specific requirements and he pays my bills,” Ollie says lightheartedly, heading to the bathroom for a shower.
I flop backwards onto my bed and stare at the ceiling, wondering how the next few weeks and months were going to unfold.
