Ella Revealed Pt.1

***Ella***

I am sat in a chair next to Freya, opposite her great-grandfather’s desk. The only sounds come from a large clock on a mantle above a crackling fireplace.

Underneath one of the teacher’s suit jackets, I am trembling a little with shock while my mind goes a mile a minute, trying to process what had just happened downstairs in the hall.

I had been able to get a fleeting, sideways glimpse of the strange, silvery, almost

holographic-looking wings that had mysteriously sprouted from my shoulder blades in the middle of the dance floor, before they had abruptly disappeared from sight.

Freya had pulled me into a hug, one that I had sorely needed at that point, before teachers who

were chaperoning the formal had swiftly intervened.

They had directed Freya and myself to the headmaster’s office immediately, but the headmaster

wasn’t here right now; thus, we are sat in silence.

Freya looks deep in thought, perhaps conversing with Mira, my necklace dangling from her hand

over the arm of the chair.

Ten minutes later, the headmaster finally arrives, sinking into his comfortable chair opposite us. I

shoot Freya a look, she nods at me and shrugs toward her grandfather. Before I can say anything,

he speaks.

“Well, the enchantments at this school weren’t quite equipped for that,” he chuckles loudly, “our lead witch on staff here has thankfully managed to do a very effective short term memory spell on

the humans who were in the vicinity. They’ll wake up tomorrow, simply remembering what a good

time they had tonight.”

Landry then looks at me with a gently smile.

“I’m sorry, I have no idea what happened…it just…happened!” I blurt out, not really knowing what I

was sorry for as I’d had zero control over what had happened.

Landry shakes his head and chuckles, “Sorry for what my dear? We have the FINAL piece of the

puzzle!” he declares triumphantly, gesturing toward Freya who then hands over my necklace.

He studies it through his glasses for a few moments, then produces a magnifying glass from a

drawer, looking at it closely before chuckling to himself.

“This is…well…it was, no ordinary necklace,” he reveals, looking at me over the tops of his glasses.

Freya and I sit in silence as he continues, my eyes still fixed on my necklace.

“This is a talisman. Once a normal necklace, it was then enchanted with a very, very old spell. It contains a quartz stone that has effectively contained your true self, locked away the entire time you have worn it. The spell on it has somehow been broken, and thus, you are no longer shackled by it. Once the talisman stopped working, the real you could finally emerge,” Landry explains,

looking at me intently.

Shackles…

At the mention of that word I recall something from my most recent dream from under the willow

tree..

‘Tonight, with his help, you will break your shackles…”

I shift uncomfortably in my chair, too afraid to ask the question I am burning to ask.

“Why does Ella have wings?” Freya asks directly, asking the question for me in a roundabout way.

Landry looks at me through his glasses and smiles.

Instead of answering right away, he stands up and goes to the cabinet behind his desk, starting to pour three glasses of the delicious golden liquid I knew he kept in there.

The suspense is killing me, but I eagerly take a glass from him and begin to drink, enjoying the warmth spreading down my throat. It is just what I needed. I smile giddily and I stop shaking from shock feeling it warm and relax me.

What is this drink?

“I began to have my suspicions about you the first time you came to this office, Ms Reva, the day I told you about the reality of this school,” he begins, taking his seat behind his desk again, “particularly after you enjoyed this very drink more than anyone else I have ever offered it to. Your ability to run faster than an alpha Lycan, an ability to heal, and now your new appendages are key to this too. I had to consult some very old books to confirm what I was starting to suspect, but apparently I only needed to wait for whatever happened this evening.”

I breathe in sharply and stare at Landry.

“You…you DO know what I am…” I say quietly, making a statement as well as a question.

Landry leans forward in his chair and temples his fingers as stares back at me intensely.

“Ms Reva, you are a Faerie.”

I stare back at Landry, my brows furrowing as his words rattle around inside my head for a

moment.

“Er…what? A Faerie? As in… Tinkerbell? Like from books and movies?” I blurt out in disbelief, hardly

believing my ears. Landry laughs heartily.

“You were more willing a short time ago to accept the existence of Lycans, witches, elves and the like. Faeries – or Fae – are no different. The main difference I would say though, is that until today,

faeries had been extinct for around six hundred years.”

I can only stare in stunned silence at this information..

Freya clears her throat.

“So… Ella’s necklace, which she said has been passed down through her family, has been concealing what she really is, this whole time?” Freya asks. Landry nods.

“Precisely. Talismans aren’t designed to last forever, though. Part of a talisman’s design is to have a break point, an end clause, as such. A rule that if fulfilled, would end the spell upon it. We have no way of knowing just how old this necklace is, or who made it, but tonight, something happened that made it decide that it had finally fulfilled its purpose,” Landry says.

I feel my cheeks flush a little and my heart races as I recall what I’d been doing the moment the necklace went haywire…

I glance over at Freya and she is looking at me in amusement, clearly thinking the same thing I am. I clench my jaw awkwardly and look away. Landry continues to talk.

“This is just one of many events unfolding before us with a greater purpose. The Fae were once an incredibly powerful, all female species, deeply connected and aligned with nature. They flourished best in the sun, the majority of their power coming directly from it. As well as having perfect command of elemental magic like witches and warlocks, they also had their own brand of magic. They had great influence over nature, growth of foliage and trees, even affecting the weather. The Fae were widely considered to be the ‘light’ to balance the ‘dark’ in the world. Since their extinction there has been a growing imbalance over the last few centuries, with an increase in the dark that has pushed it’s influence upon the world. But here we are, apparently with the last of them, very much alive and well, sitting in this very office,”

I feel anxious under his curious stare so I drink the rest of my drink and put the glass down on the table, taking in what Landry was saying.

“What happened to them? To the Fae?” I ask. He frowns for a moment and looks a bit torn.
