sit there absolutely speechless now, my eyes wide, just seventeen, still in my lacey blue dress and
ridiculous heels. I feel Landry’s words like huge weights on my shoulders.
“B-but…I’m just me, just… Ella. I’m not a fighter, or a ‘leader of the light’…I can’t be, I’m just…” I
ammer, shaking my head in disbelief at Landry’s implication, “I’m just me. Just Ella.”
Some are born great, some achieve greatness, and some have greatness thrust upon them,” Landry says theatrically. I frown, thinking this wasn’t the moment to be quoting Shakespeare to me.
Freya reaches out and squeezes my hand.
“Ella, just think how far you’ve come since September…I mean you’ve been kicking butt in combat and you run sanely fast,” she says, her face honest and hopeful.
Ish
head in confusion.
NO, hold on a damn minute! Wow, so I can run really fast…that’s not exactly a winning skill e is it?” I exclaim, exasperated.
“You can also heal very fast and there are far more abilities you will soon discover. Each Fae was said to have additional abilities, some rarer than others. Fae that conversed with animals, a rare few who could manipulate time, some who could control oceans, one could even draw energy from the moon as well as the sun. You have been released from your bonds, tonight, and the full force of what you are capable of will be revealed in due time, coupled with hard work, of course. But, I don’t think it will take much. Despite wearing that talisman you certainly have had an impact on the wider area since you started here. This talisman couldn’t contain you completely.”
“An impact?” I query. Landry nods.
“The grass here has never been greener, the trees have taken far longer than normal to lose their leaves and forget-me-nots have grown all over the place. They are a tiny blue flower that was once associated with the Fae. Moreover, your mood has undoubtedly affected the weather. When you’ve been happiest, we have all enjoyed unseasonably warm weather. When you’ve been angry or upset…it’s…been quite the opposite.”
I raise my eyebrows, that idea seemed insane.
“You think my mood has effected the weather?” I ask incredulously.
“For instance, it was strangely warm for a short time recently and then the weather dramatically shifted within the space of only one hour. We then had a week of constant thunderstorms…that were only over this particular area. A highly unusual pattern of weather. Not something most

would pick up on, but it didn’t escape my notice from here up in the tower, particularly when the idea of your true nature was under consideration,” Landry explains simply.
Freya clicks her fingers and also laughs suddenly.
“Yes! It was so sunny and warm that week before you went on your date with Austin, because you
were so happy and excited. Then…then you came back…and well…it suddenly rained out of the
blue…then thunderstormed for a week because you were so upset,” she exclaims, her excitement
trailing off substantially toward the end of her sentence, as she realises she’d inadvertently brought up my date with Austin.
Landry raises his eyebrows at the mention of Austin, but he says nothing. I shrink back in my chair
and twiddle with my fingers awkwardly as my cheeks burn a little.
“What else can I do?” I ask wanting to change the subject. Landry considers my question for a
moment before answering.
“I am uncertain of the specifics as it apparently varied from faerie to faerie. However, in addition to fast healing, speed and what I assume to be flight with those wings of yours, it is said that Fae were usually gifted telepaths with telekinetic abilities, and empaths. Elemental magic, as I already mentioned, to control fire, water, air and the earth. But to balance those widespread abilities and great power, they were physically very weak. They were easily mortally wounded beyond what their healing could deal with.”
“How do I find out what I can do?” I asks. He looks at me with great sympathy.
“That is something I cannot answer, I am afraid. Books can only tell us so much, as old as they are. There is unfortunately no living soul you can ask either,” Landry sighs.
My mind was racing around again. I felt exhausted. We sit there in silence for a minute or two, before Landry stands up and collects our glasses.
“So, what is that drink?” I ask, remembering him mentioning it earlier on. Landry smiles, “it is a simple honey mead, but perhaps don’t tell your parents I have now given you several glasses. The fact you were so enthralled by it when you were last in this room gave me an inkling as to your origins. Faeries were known for their insatiable love of honey mead.”
Freya yawns loudly next to me and stretches. I glance at the ornate clock on the wall, realising it is
now after midnight.
“As my great granddaughter has so elegantly pointed out, it is time you both went to bed. Tomorrow, the work for you begins,” Landry says, now looking intently at me.
“But, I don’t know where to begin,” I sigh, feeling more confused than ever.

“Patience, and time. You may be surprised at how easily things may start to happen for you. You have been set free, my dear,” Landry says kindly, gesturing for us to leave. Freya and I get up from
Our chairs and stare down at the necklace on Landry’s desk.
I didn’t want to see it ever again.
Freya and I return to our room and get ready for bed in silence.
I lay there in bed in the darkness, staring at the ceiling, wondering how I was going to be able to sleep with so many thoughts, questions and all this new information I now had, swirling around my
head.
I couldn’t believe that a necklace I’d worn every day of my life, for as long as I could remember, had been holding back a vital part of who I was, all this time. Equally, I found it strange that I had never ever taken it off-was that part of the design too? Did my parents know about it? Was my mum Fae, or was my grandmother? Were they even my parents? I had wondered a few times before since I looked nothing like them…
What did Landry mean by a break point?
My mind goes back an hour or so to when I’d been on the dance floor with Austin. In some sort of bizarre hypnotic state I consented to dance with him, and my senses had gone berserk at that
point.
Had it been the talisman causing all that…or was it something else?
I softly bite my lip in the darkness, now remembering our second, amazing, soul shifting kiss…a kiss that had the power to break a spell on a necklace that I could only guess had been protecting my bloodline for the six hundred years Landry had mentioned. But, it seemed unlikely that two teenagers kissing at a winter dance at school would have that sort of power…not that I had any understanding of magic, power or anything about myself anymore.
But the feelings I had felt had certainly felt powerful enough. It didn’t matter how magical it felt, or how I couldn’t seem to stop feeling the way that I felt for him, there was no way Austin could ever be with someone from an extinct species, so I still needed to try and move on. Besides, I apparently had a long road of discovery ahead, so I needed to file my kisses with Austin into the back of my mind and focus on the path ahead.
Eventually, I somehow drift off to sleep, my mind full of necklaces, wings, honey mead and the many questions that lay ahead.

I kick off my trousers and then rip off my ridiculous shirt, throwing the remains into the bin before sitting down heavily on the edge of my bed. I roughly rub my face in my hands as Ollie sits down on
is bed opposite me.
“Well…Ella definitely isn’t human,” he says. I look at him and I shrug. I am as clueless as he is.
“No…” was all I can reply with.
“So… the girl you were worried wouldn’t want to dance with you, not only danced with you but then engaged in an intense make out session with you in front of everyone. I’d call that a solid win,” Ollie begins, rubbing his hands together slowly, “but…she has…literal wings, Aus. What’s up with that?”
I shake my head.
“I have no idea, Ol. Whatever happened…I feel connected to her now more than before. I just don’t know what any of it means, because I have no idea what she is. She must be terrified, confused…” mutter, wanting nothing more than to have her in my arms again, where I could protect her and
comfort her.
The next morning I enter the sports hall ten minutes before defense class is due to begin, starting to lay out the floor mats ready for whoever might show up today.
It seems pointless, but it was my job. It was the formal last night and it was early for a Sunday at the best of times. I probably wouldn’t be here either aside from the fact I just couldn’t sleep properly last night. I needed to occupy myself.
What happened last night still confounded me. In the space of only ten minutes, things had totally
changed.
Not content with staying away from Ella anymore, I had followed the strange pulling sensation I had felt since our date, finally plucking up the courage to go ask her for that dance. I had stepped onto the dance floor, for her to literally spin and fall into me before I could say anything to her.
I had a vivid visual memory of how she looked at me on the dance floor after I’d caught her, the whites of her eyes aglow from the UV lights. The way her light blue dress and hair seemed to glow too, the delicate features of her face visible under the warm light of the vast number of fairy lights around the room. Her expression toward me was one I had not seen on her before; it was a clear look of desire. It just made me want to embrace her right then, and tell her what I now knew for sure in every fibre of my being; I was standing in front of my mate.
But, Atlas had held me back.
I wasn’t happy, but he was right, it was too soon for her. She needed to feel it too. She needed to
