A History Lesson

Honey, do you know the history of his pack?” Mum asks, her voice measured.

I hesitate, my brow furrowing.

“I think so. I read something in a book yesterday about there being only one recorded faerie-Lycan

bond before… and it sounded a lot like Austin’s pack.”

Mu nods slowly.

  1. The founding Lycan of that pack was golden-because he shared a divine bond with a he book was correct; that was the first and only time such a bond ever occurred.” She es softly, her expression unreadable.

Until now.”

A shiver runs through me.

“So… it wasn’t normal for Lycans to bond with faeries?”

“Not at all,” she says grimly. “In fact, that bond set off a chain of events that ultimately led to the near extinction of your speci She glances at the talisman, her eyes shadowed with sadness. “All

ces her fingers together on the table, considering her words carefully before speaking. “We don’t fully understand the science behind it, but faerie magic-both elemental and otherwise- is fueled by love. The experience of being in love, of receiving love in return, naturally amplifies a faerie’s power. But that alone would never have been enough to break the talisman’s spell. That’s why it remained effective for your ancestors.”

The faerie who was mate-bonded to the first Lycan of that pack became incredibly power ecause of it-far beyond what a normal faerie in love could ever achieve. More powerful than any other Fae in existence.”

A chill spreads through me as her words settle in. The weight of what she’s saying-the implications of what was now happening to me-are staggering.

I stare at Mum, struggling to fully grasp the weight of what she’s telling me.

“I still don’t understand how their bond led to the downfall of the Fae,” I say slowly, trying to piece it all together.

She exhales, her expression heavy.

“The effect of the bond wasn’t one-sided, it was truly symbiotic. Just as the faerie’s power surged, so did her mate’s. The alpha became stronger, faster and truly unstoppable. Together, they were a

force unlike anything the world had seen. Their pack rose to dominance, becoming the most

powerful in the country.”

Her gaze darkens.

“And every other alpha out there wanted the same.”

A chill runs through me.

“Many sought to replicate the bond, even at the cost of their own fated mates. They abandoned them, choosing instead to pursue faeries, convinced that if they could claim one, they too would gain unimaginable strength. Some succeeded in making faeries fall in love with them… but it was never the same. Because their bonds weren’t divine, weren’t destined.”

She pauses, her voice turning grim.

“Without the true mate bond, the power never came. The faeries they took couldn’t grant them strength the way the original bonded pair had. That failure led to desperation, to fury, and faeries were slaughtered-some by jealous she-wolves who saw them as threats, others in fits of rage by the very alphas who had relentlessly pursued them.”

I feel sick.

“The Fae were incredibly powerful, but physical strength was never their gift. They could heal faster than most… but up close, they were far too easy to kill.”

I meet her eyes, my heart hammering in my chest. “So… the fact that I have a bond with Austin is…

Mum holds my gaze.

“Significant,” she says simply.

Dad reenters the room, his expression dark and displeased.

“They want us back the day after Christmas,” he announces, his voice edged with frustration.

Mum exhales sharply, leaning back in her chair with an exasperated groan.

“Why, Matthieu? Why couldn’t you have waited to call them until after she’d gone back to school?”

she snaps, “we just got home, and this is the first time we’ve seen our daughter in months!”

Dad pinches the bridge of his nose, clearly just as frustrated. “I’m sorry, Lana, but she’s bonded to a

own, confusion and a flicker of panic creeping in.

“Why do you have to go back so soon?”

Dad sighs, rubbing his temple before answering.

“Because a faerie bonding with a Lycan hasn’t happened in nine hundred years. Nature operates in

a delicate balance, and something like this doesn’t just… happen. The Fae were known as the

‘Wardens of the Light,’ and if this bond has been divenly given after all this time, it is not a coincidence. A higher power is making a move-anticipating a need for more light in response to

an increase in the dark.”

His expression hardens as he polishes his glasses.

“The General Council is deeply concerned. There have been… events over the past year. Disturbing

ones. Signs that something is shifting.”

A chill spreads through me. I swallow hard, my expression turning grave. “Yeah… I keep hearing things like that,” I murmur, the uneasy feeling in my chest tightening.

“What I don’t understand, is how come you let me go to a school for the supernatural, in the countryside? Why not force me to stay in London?”

I ask them, struggling to reconcile their decision with the way they had raised me until now. It seemed counterintuitive, in fact almost contradictory, to everything they had done to keep me

hidden.

Dad exhales, his expression thoughtful.

“It was clear that your instincts were pulling you toward the countryside, and Exton was the perfect place for you. Whether or not you discovered the school’s true nature, you would be somewhere under strict protection. The Council actually recommended Exton to us before you even found it yourself. It was one of the safest places you could go until we told you the truth, when you turned eighteen.”

I blink in surprise.

“So… you were going to tell me?”

Mum nods.

“Yes, you were always going to learn the truth about who-and what-you are on your eighteenth

birthday. That was the plan. We had every intention of telling you ourselves. The talisman was
