The Golden Lycans (Ella) novel Chapter 69

Magical Combat

I enter the greenhouse for my free period after biology. It had definitely become my own little sanctum since my birthday.

I draw on my magic, growing a vine called star jasmine’ all across the top of the brick wall and around the perimeter of the greenhouse. It was one we had at home and I knew it had beautiful little white flowers, along with a gorgeous scent. Over the course of the day I had gotten used to the constant discomfort I felt; the divine bond trying desperately to encourage me to approach

Austin, particularly during meal times.

“Redecorating?” asks Will, coming up next to me as I prod each unopened bud, coaxing them to

bloom.

“Just adding some flourishes,” I reply. I look sideways at him, not surprised in the slightest to see

him studying my aura.

“How’s it looking?” I ask, arching a brow back at him.

“It looks like somebody has finally made a decision…and the right one at that,” Will says, with a friendly smile. I take a deep breath and nod. I had made a decision, but I was nervous about how I was going to communicate that decision to Austin. I kept thinking that perhaps I could do a bit of fire magic first and then go find him on Saturday, but I thought that maintaining a level head was

probably the right way to go.

“I have. On Saturday I will accept the bond…or whatever it is I have to do. As a Luna I can hopefully make more of a lasting impact on this world than just by being a doctor, much like the last faerie who was bonded to Austin’s ancestor managed to do. I can be both,” I state proudly. Will chuckles

fondly at me.

“Attagirl. A Luna of the modern times,” he says and I smile back at him, “but what did the last faerie

do?”

“She ensured no one ever went hungry, even throughout the winter. I don’t know if I’ll be able to do

that, but I hope I get to try,” I reply, “anyway, supposedly… faeries are telekinetic.”

“Well, that’d be ideal instead of walking to the other side of the room for the stuff we need for the

chemistry practicals. But not ideal in front of our human classmates,” Will jokes.

“Well, I want to try it today…on… that watering can over there,” I gesture, “and I just need you to just…be here with me, give advice, anything you think that might help.”

He nods as I turn to face the watering can…and then quickly back toward him for a moment.

“Just please don’t laugh at how daft I am going to look while trying to doing this.”

I go over and stand with the watering can just a metre away from me. I focus my breathing as usual and slowly raised my hand out in front of me at hip height. I stare at the watering can, willing it to come to my hand. After a few minutes, I hear Will burst into laughter behind me and I lose focus, turning to scowl at him.

“Are you sure this is one of your abilities?” he asks, looking amused.

“Yes, I moved things as a child. We shall see who looks silly when I end up standing here holding that watering can,” I say pointedly, turning back to the can. I had thought it was separate from my magic, but perhaps it needed it. I will my magic to my fingers before I concentrate hard on the watering can once again. After a few seconds, it twitches and I dropped my concentration in excitement. Will is suddenly standing by my side, his interest piqued.

“Wow, maybe there is something to it after all. A lot of this stuff is mental, and about feeling; try thinking about how it would feel in your hand. Think of the connection between it, and your hand. See if that helps,” Will suggests. I nod and try again. I think about the cold, metal handle against my palm….and the watering can immediately takes flight; the handle racing firmly into the palm of my

hand.

I shriek with joy and jump up and down with the watering can in my hand. Perhaps this did look a

bit silly.

“You see? This will be great for next time I forget to pick up my cutlery,” I joke gleefully.

I

“Glad to hear you have such monumentous aspirations for this newfound ability,” Will jokes back.

“Yeah, I’m not very creative. But… thank you for your advice,” I say happily.

I practiced some more with various objects strewn around the greenhouse, and I was really beginning to get the hang of it. After half an hour, I no longer needed to consider the feeling at all. It became more of an instinctual process rather than a conscious one. Once I wanted an object, it

came to me effortlessly.

“Don’t forget to come tonight at seven, in the sports hall,” Will reminds me after an hour or so of me mucking around with the other “Can’t wait for Magic club!” I say in the weirdest voice I could manage, making it sound less cool than it probably will be.

“Honestly, I am going to see it in your aura after, you’re going to love it,” Will assures me.

After dinner that evening, I change into what I usually wear for combat classes and Freya is

“Don’t tell me you’re going out for a run in this?” Freya says, gesturing at the rain lashing against the

window.

“Definitely not, it’s horrendous out there. Also, in case you were wondering, this weather has nothin g to do with me,” I assure her while I pull my long hair into a high ponytail.

“Then why the get-up?” she asks.

“Uhh…magic club?” I reply, not entirely sure what to really call it aside from my joke term earlier.

“Wow, you just get cooler and cooler,” Freya jokes sarcastically.

“Ha ha. Will is starting like…a magic combat class, I guess. I felt so powerless when I got attacked in Regents Park. I hate that I would’ve died if Will hadn’t shown up. I need to know how to defend myself properly using what I have at my disposal. I don’t want to have to rely on someone to save me,” I say indignantly.

“Sounds like a good plan. Maybe you can try taking your wings for a spin after?” Freya suggests.

I head down to the sports hall just before seven to find Will there with four other people, two guys and two girls. I recognise one of them from my biology class, whose name was Stefan, but I have

never seen the others.

“Is this her?” says one of the girls excitedly, who had flame red hair and a nose piercing.

“Definitely her, I remember the night of the formal,” drawls one of the guys in an American accent; a tall lean guy with black hair.

I approach them, feeling a little apprehensive now, as they’re all staring at me like I was someone

highly interesting.

“Guys, this is Ella,” Will says, gesturing toward me. The guy called Stefan from biology pipes up.

“Can we see your wings?”

Will rolls his eyes and immediately turns to Stefan with a frown.

“Guys, don’t…I mean…we talked about this,” he says, sounding annoyed. I smile at how Will, finding

his over-protective stance quite endearing.

“No, it’s okay, I would be curious too. Truthfully, I only figured out how to do this last night,” I say quietly. I roll my shoulders back, thankful I’d worn a racer back top as my wings emerge gracefully from my shoulder blades. It was kind of thrilling, how amazed they were at them. Will had never

seen them before either, so he looked more than intrigued, at first.

“Can you fly?” the other girl asks.

“No, I’ve not tried…yet,” I reply, “but I’m pretty eager to learn how to defend myself first.”
