Standing beside Matthew, Pierre walked over. "Apologies, Carson. I don't know if you've finished reading it yet, but I promised to give him the medical book."
Carson chuckled. "Don't worry about it. The medical book is yours. They're at my place. Let's come to my house."
Matthew didn't expect things to work out so well. "Sounds good. Let's go to your place and get the book now."
Pierre furrowed his brows. "I'm going to pass on that."
Smiling, Carson responded, "Why not? Let's go together."
Pierre shook his head. "I'm not going."
Carson's smile faded. "What's wrong? Did I upset you?"
Pierre's expression darkened. "Your wife chased me and attacked me. I'm a grown man. Getting chased around by a woman is embarrassing."
Caron's expression changed. "Why would my wife want to hurt you? What did you do to her?"
Pierre was taken aback and snapped, "What are you getting at, Carson? Did you think I messed with your wife or something? Mr. Grant was there too, so he could vouch for me. I didn't do anything."
Carson's expression softened. "You didn't do anything? Then, why was my wife after you?"
Pierre sounded frustrated. "I'm just having terrible luck being your friend, who's scared of his wife. I don't even have a wife, so I'm free from all those woman problems. Just because I know you, I ended up getting chased down the street by your angry wife."
Carson looked a bit annoyed. "Hey, don't think of my wife like a feisty woman. You're just being too dramatic. She is just scratching you a little, it isn't going to hurt, so why are you mad about it? That's why you're still single until now."
Pierre raised an eyebrow and gritted his teeth. After staring at Carson for a while, he remarked, "You must've been living under a rock if you think she is gentle. This is unbelievable."
Carson waved his hand. "Forget it. Let's leave this matter behind us. Come back to my place. I promise she won't bother you."
Could Pierre really trust Carson's promise?
He was still reluctant to visit Carson's place, thinking that he shouldn't trust Carson's words.
When he looked at Matthew, Pierre figured he had to hand the book to Matthew in person. He responded with hesitation, "Fine. I'll head to your place. I'm so unlucky to know someone like you."
…
20 minutes later, Matthew, Pierre, and Carson arrived at the front yard.
Carson gestured with his hand and warmly welcomed the others. "We're at my house. Come on in."
Rebecca demanded in a huff, "If you want to sleep in the bed, you'd better promise me not to attend any medical conferences again."
With a pleading look, Carson begged, "Traditional medicine is my career. If I don't go to conferences, how can I improve?"
Rebecca smacked Carson's arm. "You only stand a 50% success rate in treating your patients. You'd just embarrass yourself at those conferences.
"We own 60 houses, and each one brings in 800 dollars a month. That's 48 thousand dollars per month.
"You're set for life. Just enjoy your card games and have some drinks. Isn't that a wonderful life? Why are you going down the rabbit hole of traditional medicine?"
Carson's expression turned serious. "I'm a man, and I just can't waste my life away like that. I need a purpose, and traditional medicine is my passion. Without that, there's no meaning in my life."
Rebecca scrunched up her brows and fixed her gaze on Carson for a long while.
Then, she gritted her teeth and asked, "Is traditional medicine more important than me? What's that supposed to mean, Carson? What do you take me for? Down on your knees."
After a thud, Carson dropped to his knees without hesitation. Undoubtedly, he was quite experienced in doing this.
Matthew was stunned as he watched the scene unfold. But he didn't say anything about it. After all, every couple interacted with each other differently.
