With a loud crash, Tessa's metallic exoskeleton collided with the stairs, sending sparks flying and concrete fragments scattering everywhere. The impact left the stairs damaged as dust filled the air.
When the dust settled, Tessa lay motionless on the stairs. Matthew descended a couple of steps and crouched beside her unconscious form, his eyes fixed on her face as memories of his time after prison flooded back.
Matthew's murderous intent grew stronger as he clenched his fist and raised it. However, Lorraine's image suddenly flashed through his mind, and his fist froze mid-air.
Only three people in this world could make him hold back—his parents and Lorraine. Though Tessa was the woman he hated most, she was, unfortunately, still Lorraine's mother.
If Lorraine were to ask about her mother's whereabouts, he would have no answer to give if he killed Tessa. Even knowing he would regret letting Tessa live, Matthew forced himself to lower his fist for Lorraine's sake.
As he started to leave, a thought struck him. Despite learning the Evans family's fighting techniques, Tessa should not have the nerve to meet him, especially after the last time he put her in her place.
Yet, here she was, alone. Clearly, she was confident her exoskeleton would make her unstoppable. She had bragged about it—claiming it could punch through 70 layers of bricks.
Curiosity tugged at him. After all, just letting her go felt like too much of a mercy. He climbed back up and crouched beside her, a grin spreading across his face.
An hour later, Matthew left carrying various pieces of the exoskeleton, leaving Tessa unconscious on the stairs.
...
When Tessa finally came to, her jaw was throbbing with pain. She rubbed her face and sat up, her mind replaying the moments before she blacked out.
She had not even had the chance to strike before Matthew's kick took her down. Looking around, she realized the stairwell was empty. He was long gone.
Then, Tessa glanced down and realized she was stripped to her underwear—the mechanical exoskeleton was gone. The realization hit her like a thunderbolt, and her mind went blank for a moment.
The mechanical exoskeleton was Leander's life's work, developed with his entire fortune, and now she had lost it. She knew it would be difficult to explain this to him.
Matthew nodded thoughtfully. "I've heard of those. They're sometimes called bionic arms. But I've never seen a full-body suit like this."
Emily explained, "Medical applications were just the start. Military programs began using similar designs to enhance soldiers' strength, enabling them to lift several times their body weight.
"But those were for simple tasks like moving items. I once knew a colleague who built an exoskeleton strong enough for two people to lift an armored vehicle together."
Matthew's eyes widened in disbelief. After all, the idea of two people moving an armored vehicle was simply unimaginable.
Emily continued, "I have friends who are exploring this, and it's also being researched abroad. However, there's no saying how far the technology has been developed because the most advanced versions are kept classified unless they're cleared for commercial release."
Matthew pointed to the components on the table and asked, "Can you help me find someone to test this?"
He was deeply intrigued by the possibility of witnessing its incredible power, such as lifting armored vehicles and punching through 70 layers of brick.
