Finnegan was somewhat taken aback by the sudden question.
“Mom, how did I upset Bernie?”
“If you didn't, then what's the deal with Hailey? Why is she always around you, and why is she so close to you?”
She paused before continuing, “And there's Yuliana, and Alisha that Rhia mentioned. There's also Ms. Langdon. What's their story?”
Finnegan gave a bitter smile. “Mom, we are just friends. What are you thinking?”
“No, that's not right.” Quiana shook her head with certainty. “If they're just casual friends with you, aren't they being a little too nice to you? Ms. Langdon, especially. Even after we moved to the school dormitory, she would still visit us every now and then. Does that even make sense?”
“Did you say that Mandy often went to visit you?”
“That's right. She always brought gifts with even greater enthusiasm than Rhia.”
Finnegan's lips twitched.
He had thought that Mandy had been behaving these past few days.
Unexpectedly, she was still scheming behind the scenes.
Looks like I'll have to teach her a lesson when I return home later.
Quiana took his hand, speaking earnestly. “Finny, I know you're quite accomplished now, surrounded by many exceptional young women. But as a man, you must be responsible and accountable. You can't let Bernie down. She's such a wonderful girl.”
It would be hard to clarify everything, so Finnegan could only respond with a bitter smile. “Mom, don't worry. I will never let Bernie down!”
“Then promise me one thing.”
To save Quiana from overthinking, Finnegan signaled her to speak.
Lowering her voice, Quiana advised, “Now that Bernie has moved to Dragon Bay, you should hasten to have a child with her. This way, I will believe that you won't let Bernie down, and your relationship with her will also become more stable.”
“But Bernie and I are only engaged. We're not yet married. Besides, we're both in the rising phase of our careers right now. It's not appropriate!”
“There's nothing inappropriate about it. Establishing a family before a career, or having children before starting a business, is also acceptable.” Seemingly worried that Finnegan might refuse, Quiana sternly warned, “If you don't agree, then I'll have no choice but to warn Hailey and the others.”
Finnegan quickly raised both hands in surrender. “All right, I'll listen to you. I'll make sure Bernie gets pregnant as soon as possible.”
Only then did Quiana nod in satisfaction. “That's more like it. It seems there aren't many patients in the afternoon. Come with me to pray at Derport Church.”
Finnegan asked, “Mom, when did you start believing in these things?”
With a sigh, Quiana said, “Since your return, our home has undergone many changes. It feels as if we're living in a dream, so unreal. I want to pray for peace of mind, asking God to bless us and ensure everything goes well.”
Finnegan nodded in understanding. “I'll have Hailey drive.”
Not long after, Finnegan followed Quiana to Derport Church outside of Jadeborough.
Hailey was left waiting in the car, while Finnegan assisted Quiana as they prepared to ascend the steps.
“Finnegan!”
He had only taken a few steps when he heard Sasha's voice from behind him.
Glancing back, he saw Sasha approaching cheerfully, accompanied by her mother, Kathleen Wagner.
Quiana instantly became alert as she grabbed Finnegan's hand. “Finnegan, isn't that the daughter of Mr. Miles? I heard from Rhia that she's interested in you. She's been secretly sending numerous gifts to Rhia, and they're quite expensive too.”
Finnegan knew that Quiana had become suspicious again.
He quickly lowered his voice and explained, “Mom, you really can't blame me for this. I don't have much contact with Ms. Miles. If you have to blame someone, blame Rhia. She's the one accepting gifts every day, trying to make me out to be a scoundrel.”
Quiana huffed, “Then I'll have Rhia go home and ask her tonight. If it turns out to be true, I'll give her a piece of my mind.”
Finnegan retorted, “Are you perhaps hoping that my relationship with her isn't stable?”
“That's right!” Sasha nodded briskly. “I really hope that your relationship with her is unstable, better yet, you should break off the engagement. Because if that happens, I'll have a chance. Don't you agree?”
A smile tugged at the corner of Finnegan's mouth as he quickened his pace upwards. “No wonder people often say you're the wildest of the Four Beauties of Jadeborough.”
“That's nonsense. Waylynn is the wildest one. It's just that her absence in recent years has led to me being falsely accused.”
Waylynn is the wildest?
Finnegan thought about Waylynn who had already recovered, yet despite several visits to the Wright residence, she was nowhere to be seen.
He then thought about Romona who was her cousin.
He couldn't help but touch his nose. “Perhaps. But right now, you're the wildest!”
Before long, the group had ascended the steps and arrived in front of Derport Church.
Quiana asked Finnegan to wait, while she and Kathleen proceeded inside.
“Finnegan, go see my grandfather. Even the priest here has the utmost respect for him.”
However, Finnegan remained motionless, his gaze fixed intently on a figure beneath an old locust tree in the distance.
His shadow showed signs of age, but he stood tall and straight.
The autumn wind blew, causing his head of white hair to sway with it.
Dressed in a linen outfit, he had a sagelike presence.
When Sasha saw that Finnegan remained motionless, she followed his gaze. A smile then appeared on her face. “He's really here again!”
