Outside the door, Stanley, Horace, and Brittany all froze at the same moment.

Jessica and Ida had left. Though the secret of Ida’s Coldost witchcraft had been exposed, they hadn’t lost.

Jessica’s eyes sparkled with excitement. “Do you really think Stanley will marry me?”

Ida took a calm sip of her tea. “Of course he will. Just get ready to be a bride. Only I can break the Heartchain Curse inside him.”

Jessica linked her arm with Ida’s. “You’re the only one who’s truly good to me.”

Ida smiled. “Now that you’re my daughter, of course I’ll take care of you.”

Jessica said sweetly, “Thanks, Mom!”

In Jessica’s world, she would call anyone who treated her well or was useful to her “Mom“.

Just then, a maid hurried in. “We received a delivery.”

Ida looked up. “What is it?”

The maid pulled out a gilded invitation. “It’s an invitation.”

Ida took it in her hand. “To what?”

She unfolded the gold–embossed card. Jessica leaned in to see it, and their expressions instantly darkened.

The maid trembled as she said, “I heard that Mr. and Mrs. Larson have taken Ms. Wendy in as their goddaughter. The Larsons are throwing a grand party to celebrate. They’re inviting all the elite families in the Capital. They sent this invitation, asking… asking you to attend.”

What?

Jessica shot to her feet, furious. “What the hell?! They actually took Wendy in as their goddaughter?”

Ida’s face grew cold. She thought she had won the battle by having Jessica call her “Mom“, but she hadn’t expected Horace and Brittany to take Wendy in as their goddaughter so quickly.

The fact was, Wendy was Horace and Brittany’s true daughter.

Ida turned to Jessica.

“I’ve known for a while that Horace and Brittany like Wendy a lot. Even though they think you’re their daughter, their hearts have already shifted toward Wendy. Now that they’ve made her their goddaughter, what if something goes wrong? Once they realize Wendy is their real daughter, you’ll mean nothing to them!

Jessica’s heart sank deep.
