Perhaps Halsey and Dwight’s story had already ended three years ago.

But fate had a strange way of working itself out- no matter where Halsey went, she seemed to run into him. She came here to eat, and there was Shaun, standing right in front of her.

Hearing others compliment how well she and Calvin looked together, Halsey offered a polite smile, saying nothing more.

But Shaun saw her smile through a different lens. Sometimes silence was taken as consent, and with Halsey and Calvin both single, anything was possible.

Calvin chuckled. “Come on, Mr. Rogers. Don’t tease me and Halsey I’m fine with it, but Halsey might be shy.”

At that, the other executives gave sly smiles.

“Didn’t know you were so protective.”

“Professor Johnson, you seem very close with Ms. Halsey.”

“Alright, enough joking around,” one executive said. “Are you two here for lunch?”

Calvin nodded. “Yes. Mrs. Lincoln and my mother are here, too.”

He glanced toward the front. Shaun looked up and saw a small group of elegant ladies chatting and laughing–Halsey’s mother Patricia, Calvin’s mother Samantha Johnson, and several wealthy socialites from the upper class.

Shaun quietly withdrew his gaze.

Suddenly, one of the executives spoke up, “By the way, Mr. Lane, I saw you looking at Ms. Halsey when we came in. How do you know her?”

Shaun turned his gaze to Halsey, ignoring the question. Instead, he asked her, “Ms. Halsey, do we know each other?”

He didn’t answer the question directed at him; he threw it back to her instead.

Halsey’s lashes fluttered before she answered the executive, “Yes, we know each other. He once did me a favor, and I’m very grateful.”

She answered gracefully and clearly, yet at the same time, she kept them at a distance.

Shaun’s cold, clear eyes darkened slightly with a hint of chill.

“I see,” someone said. “What a coincidence! Mr. Lane actually helped Ms. Halsey.”

“Let’s go,” Shaun interjected.

“Yes, we’re all here today to discuss a collaboration with Mr. Lane. It’s rare for him to honor us with his presence, so please excuse us.”

The executives followed Shaun as he walked away.

Calvin watched Shaun’s tall, handsome figure retreat. “So this is the rising star of the business world–Shaun Lane, founder of GM Tech. He looks young, probably about our age.”

Halsey nodded. “Yeah, he’s the same age as us.”

“Word is, this business tycoon built everything from scratch. Nowadays, people who make it on their own are truly rare. Young and talented men like him are a real find,” Calvin said, clearly admiring Shaun.

Halsey watched Shaun’s figure fade from sight. Three years ago, he was a poor kid. Now, he was a rising star. Those three years must have been incredibly tough.
