Halsey took a deep breath, steadied her emotions, and nodded. “Okay.”

She walked out with Madeline.

Shaun had already laid out a full spread. He was a great cook; everything looked and smelled amazing. Halsey’s eyes were immediately drawn to the fish and chips with malt vinegar-it was mouthwatering just to look at.

Ever since she got pregnant, she had been craving tangy food. This dish was exactly what she wanted.

Madeline looked over the table. “Fish and chips with malt vinegar, borscht, mashed potatoes with sour cream… Shaun, why did you cook everything tangy today?”

Shaun placed the utensils and bowls on the table without saying a word.

Madeline suddenly smacked her forehead. “Oh! I get it now. You noticed Halsey hasn’t had much of an appetite lately, and she’s been craving tangy stuff, so you made all this for her, didn’t you?”

Halsey’s heart skipped a beat. She glanced at Shaun-was all this really for her?

Shaun didn’t confirm or deny it. “I’ll get the borscht. Start eating.”

Then he walked back into the kitchen.

Madeline shot Halsey a teasing look. “Shaun’s not that bad, right?”

Halsey stayed silent. “Not bad” wasn’t even close-he was pretty great.

Madeline leaned in and whispered, “Come on, I can totally tell. Shaun must’ve made you angry. But with how sweet he’s being now, maybe give him another chance?”

Halsey just smiled faintly. The truth was, she and Shaun had already broken up..

She had been so firm about ending things, and Shaun clearly didn’t love her anymore. Now, he was with Chelsea…and even followed Geneva on Instagram. In fact, he was surrounded by pretty young women now.

At that moment, Madeline’s phone rang.

“I’m gonna take this call real quick.

She headed into her room to answer it.

Shaun walked out of the kitchen. “Where’s Maddy?”

“She’s taking a call,” Halsey replied.

Shaun gave a small nod.

When she saw him carrying the soup, Halsey reached out quickly. “Here, let me help.”

But the tip of her finger brushed the edge of the hot pot, and she winced with a sharp inhale.

“Ow…!”

Shaun set down the soup and immediately grabbed her hand. “Are you okay?”

Halsey shook her head. “It’s fine

Shaun gently led her into the kitchen. “Rinse it under cold water.”

Then he suddenly lowered his head and gently took her fingertip into his mouth.
