Third Person’s POV

Cassian stared at Trista, feeling like his heart had been ripped open with a jagged, bloody blade.

He’d never known. He had no idea that Howard had tested her like that all those years ago.

Back when the Silverlight Pack was drowning and needed every cent they could get, she had turned down an astronomical fortune just to stay by his side.

Trista kept her eyes lowered, deliberately shutting out the burning, regret–filled gaze he was leveling at her.

Looking back on that choice now, she felt nothing but a crushing weight of regret.

Sensing Cassian’s resolve wavering, Samantha panicked. She grabbed his arm, her fingers digging in as she sobbed hysterically. “Cassian, you have to believe me! Howard forced me to take that money, I swear to the Moon Goddess!”

Cassian’s eyes flickered between Trista and Samantha, a war of agony raging in his dark pupils.

After a long, suffocating silence, he finally shoved the guards aside.

He planted himself in front of Samantha once again, facing Howard. “Grandfather, regardless of what happened in the past, Samantha is the mother of my child. Algernon is my blood. I choose to believe she had her reasons.”

In Cassian’s mind, Samantha’s life had been ruined because of him.

As an Alpha, there was no way in hell he was going to stand by and watch her get destroyed here.

Trista stood there, perfectly still.

Watching him jump into his protective “hero” mode didn’t even spark a reaction in her anymore. It was exactly what she expected.

Howard shot a lethal look at Brooke.

Brooke stepped forward and slapped a check for a massive amount onto the table in front of Samantha.

“Miss Fernandez,” Howard said, his voice low and vibrating with authority. “Take the money. And get the hell out of Ironthorn territory. Now.”

The words hit Samantha like a physical blow. Her head was spinning.

Right there in front of all the pack elders, her knees gave out and she collapsed onto the cold floor. “Howard, I know I’m a nobody! I know my bloodline isn’t good enough for a warrior like Cassian! But we have a bond! Algernon is your own great–grandson! I’m begging you, for the sake of the child, give us a chance to survive!”

A murderous glint flashed in Howard’s eyes. “In Ironthorn, your ‘will‘ has never mattered.”

He gave a sharp nod. Brooke signaled the guards, and a group of elite Ironthorn soldiers lunged forward.

They knew exactly how fast and dangerous Cassian was, so they swarmed him from behind, working together to pin his arms and lock his joints until he was neutralized.

As Cassian watched the guards start to drag Samantha away, he turned a desperate, threatening glare on Trista. “Don’t you dare forget what you promised me in that car!” he roared.

Trista stepped forward slowly, placing herself in front of the guards who were hauling Samantha off.

Despite the suffocating pressure in the room, she pulled Samantha behind her, shielding her.

Then, she looked Howard in the eye, her voice eerily calm. “Grandfather, let them go. Since they’re the ones truly in love, let’s just make it official and let them be together.”

The room went cold. Howard’s face turned a bruised shade of pale from pure rage.

“You pathetic, spineless girl!” he bellowed. “I am trying to protect your seat as Luna!”

Howard surged to his feet, swinging his heavy, ceremonial cane–a symbol of absolute power–straight at Trista’s head with a lethal whistle.

Trista didn’t move. She didn’t even flinch. She just closed her eyes.

It didn’t matter how much it hurt; if she could use this moment to force Samantha into her spot, she’d finally be free.

“TRISTA!”

Seeing the heavy wood about to connect, a guttural, animalistic roar ripped from Cassian’s throat.

His muscles bulged as he violently threw off the guards holding him. In a blur of motion, he lunged forward, throwing his body over Trista and shielding her in his arms.
