At the same time, inside the Ironthorn packhouse boardroom.

Cassian poured a cup of coffee and handed it to Alaina. “Mom, what are you doing here?”

Alaina leaned back against the leather sofa and set her clutch aside. “I was just in the neighborhood and figured I’d see how you two were holding up.”

Cassian looked down, avoiding his mother’s sharp eyes. “We’re doing fine.”

Alaina set her cup down, her expression hardening. “Showing up at a public event with Trista and Samantha is what you call ‘fine‘?”

“Don’t listen to Wynn’s drama,” Cassian said, his face a mask of indifference.

“Cassian, I’m your mother, I want your mating to work,” Alaina said, her voice heavy with worry. “But you have a biological kid with Samantha, and zero kids with Trista to keep things together. At this rate, your mating bond is going to snap.”

Cassian stayed silent, his Alpha aura turning stiff and cold.

Alaina sighed. “Take my advice, Cassian. End your mating bond. Let each other move on with some dignity.”

Cassian’s back went rigid. “Mom, I’m not doing that. Period.”

As for kids, he figured they’d have them eventually.

Alaina knew her son. Seeing him refuse to let go, she realized she was talking to a brick wall.

She grabbed her bag and stood up to leave, throwing one last warning over her shoulder, “Keep being this stubborn, Cassian, and no one will be able to save you.”

When Alaina found out her own mate had cheated years ago, she felt like her whole world had collapsed.

Humphrey swallowed hard. “Honestly? A woman who. does that probably hates her mate. If murder were legal, she’d probably have used poison instead.”

Cassian’s face went from bad to worse. Humphrey shut his mouth immediately.

“Wait, did Luna Trista do this?” he wondered.

This was the gossip of the century.

He dropped his files and backed out of the room as fast as he could.

The massive office went dead silent.

Cassian stood by the window, looking out over the LA skyline.

He tried to tell himself that Trista was just disappointed in him.

She was acting out because he’d been too controlling lately; she was just venting.

“She loves me too much to actually give up,” he thought. “Twenty years of history doesn’t just vanish.”

He turned back to his desk and mind–linked his beta. “Humphrey, get the lawyer in here.”

Then, he sent a message to Trista.

Trista had just seen the message on her comm–stone when the doorbell rang.

She opened it to find Samantha storming in, looking like she was ready to catch a body.

Trista frowned and let her into the living room.

Samantha’s eyes immediately locked onto the bruises and bite marks on Trista’s neck–the aggressive marks Cassian had left the night before.

Samantha’s eyes turned red with jealousy.

“You said you’d help me!” she screamed. “You said you wanted a mating severance! But you’ve been playing me this whole time!”

“Samantha, what the hell are you talking about? You’re acting crazy,” Trista said, totally confused,

Samantha realized she was losing it and tried to pull herself together, though she was still shaking.

“I just got a direct order from Cassian,” she yelled. “He told me I have to be out of this apartment by tonight. Are you happy now?”

Trista rubbed her temples.

This was a total backfire. She’d planned to get them in bed together, make a huge scene, and use the scandal to force Cassian to sign the severance papers.

Instead, she’d ended up getting marked herself, and now Cassian was suspicious of Samantha.

But to Samantha, Trista’s silence looked like a “mission accomplished” smirk.

Trista was out of ideas. She sank into the sofa, thinking hard, before looking up at Samantha. “Do you have any ideas on how to kill this relationship for good?”
