Samantha locked eyes with Trista, hesitating for a second before dropping a bombshell. “I actually have an idea. The question is, do you have the balls to break a major pack taboo?”

Trista raised an eyebrow. “I’m listening.”

Samantha leaned in, her voice dripping with venom. “Go find some random rogue and sleep with him. I’ll make sure Cassian walks in on the whole thing. The second he sees his mate being marked by another man, he’ll lose his mind. He won’t just sever your mating bond–he’ll kick you out of the pack so fast your head will spin.”

Trista let out a cold, dry laugh as she stood up. “Samantha, get real. I want out, but I’m not about to trash my reputation and my dignity just to blow up my life for you. That’s a suicide mission, not a plan.”

Samantha finally snapped, “Oh, cut the ‘noble‘ act! You knew drugging an Alpha was a long shot, but you pushed me to do it anyway. You don’t want to leave–you’re just full of shit! You’re jealous of how much Cassian protects me, so you set me up to ruin things between us. You have zero intention of giving up that Luna seat!”

Trista didn’t even bother arguing. “If you think I’m playing you, then whatever. Feel free to believe what you want. Cassian is obsessed with you, right? I’m sure he’ll keep sneaking around behind Howard’s back to find you, no matter how far away you live. Now, get out.”

Samantha’s fists were clenched so hard her nails were drawing blood. “Cassian loves me! You’re the one clinging to a mating bond that’s already dead. If you’re so desperate for a separation, why were you in his bed last night soaking up his pheromones?”

Samantha blurted it out, desperate now. “If you really want to help us and you’re too ‘good‘ to find another man, then just leave! Pack your bags, leave the territory, and never come back!”

“Samantha, don’t be a selfish brat,” she said, her voice like steel. “I was born in this city. My family, my friends, and my carcer are all rooted in this soil. You think I’m going to pack up and become an exile just because of a man who can’t keep it in his pants? You and Cassian aren’t worth that kind of sacrifice. Not even close.”

“See? I knew it!” Samantha yelled. “You just can’t let with being his mate!”

Trista was beyond over it. “Samantha, instead of trying to pick a fight with me, why don’t you use your brain to figure out how to get Cassian to sign the papers? Until that happens, remember this: we are mates protected by both pack law and the legal system. I can spend his money whenever I want, and I can sleep with him whenever I feel like it. And if I change my mind and decide to pop out a real heir for the pack? You’re officially erased.”

Trista added one final, icy sting, “So, while I’m still in the mood to quit this job, you’d better find a way to make him give up on me.”

Samantha couldn’t get the upper hand on Trista, so she spent the rest of the afternoon miserably packing her bags.

Madison stopped by just as she was finishing her inventory.

Madison looked confused. “Samantha, you just moved into this penthouse. Why are you heading back to the slums already?”

Samantha’s eyes welled up with practiced tears. “Luna Trista… she just can’t stand me. She’s been using her rank to make my life a living hell. Cassian is worried I’ll get hurt if I stay, so he asked me to lay low at my old place for a while.”

Madison was fuming. “Samantha, you’ve already given him a son! What is there to be scared of? Just take this to the Ironthorn Council. Everyone knows who Cassian actually cares about. Why are you taking this lying down?”

Samantha lowered her head, dodging Madison’s gaze.

She couldn’t tell her the truth: that the kid wasn’t even Cassian’s. If that lie ever got out, she’d be lucky to keep her head.

Despite being back for so long, she and Cassian hadn’t even shared a real intimate moment, let alone a deep marking.

If Cassian had ever let her get that close, she’d be the official Luna by now.
