Chapter 97

Third Person’s POV

That night, Cassian’s new residence.

It was a large, flat apartment in the bay luxury district with a sweeping view of the distant city lights.

Cassian was on the ninth floor: Fred was on the thirteenth.

Fred scanned the apartment from top to bottom, a sneer playing on his lips. Even if you turn this into a display model and hang wedding photos everywhere, Trista still might not look twice.”

Cassian ignored him, placing new dualsets of toiletries piece by piece into the bathroom: toothbrush holders, towels, shaving gearall perfectly aligned, as if he were trying to reconstruct the order of his life.

Fred leaned against the doorframe, his tone blunt. Cassian, no mate can tolerate their alpha constantly keeping an ex around, especially one with a pup involved. If you want to pull Trista back, you have to be absolutely clear.

Seeing Cassian’s silence, Fred pressed further, a mocking smile in his voice. Don’t tell me? Samantha shed a few tears, and you faltered?

Cassian’s brow was tight with pain, his frustration finally showing. It’s not about faltering.

He lowered his voice. If Howard knew that pup isn’t biologically mine, he would act exactly like he did six years agowithout any regard for the consequences.

Fred countered. You have so many people around you. Why does he only target her?

Cassian’s throat worked, but he offered no answer.

Fred made the point even more direct. Because she has an agenda toward you. She destabilizes your mating bond and threatens your inheritance path. To a man like your grandfather, this isn’t a private matter; it’s a risk.

Cassian immediately denied it, but his tone lacked conviction. Samantha isn’t like that.

He explained on her behalf, as if each sentence were a defense. She’s been ill for a long time. She came back partly to be in a familiar place, and partly for the pup. She needs stability, not me.

He paused, his voice heavy. She chose to leave for the sake of my inheritance, and she was later forced into marriage. She’s had a terrible six years, yet she never asked for help. She paid too high a price for me. Now she’s returned with Algernon and asked for my help. I cannot refuse.”

Fred stared at him, his counterquestion sharp and concise. So Trista just deserves to suffer all of this?

Mentioning Trista made Cassian’s eyes flicker, as if he had been physically struck.

The city lights outside reflected in his eyes, but they couldn’t penetrate the heavy shadow layered beneath.

He was silent for a long time, meticulously crushing the turmoil in his chest.

He finally spoke, his voice low and strained. Trista grew up cherished. After we mated, I never let her endure true hardship.”

He paused, searching for a justifiable reason. At least in my view, I haven’t wronged her.

Cassian looked at Fred, his gaze lacking confidence. But Samantha is different.

He continued. She comes from an ordinary background, she understands her place, and she knows when to yield. She supported me through the most dangerous part of the inheritance struggle. All the losses and hardships she faced were because of me.”

His throat moved, as if swallowing something bitter. I can’t pretend none of that happened.”

Just then, the commstone on the sink vibrated.

Cassian glanced at it. The screen went dark, and two seconds later, Fred’s cell phone rang.

They exchanged a look. Fred answered the call, and his expression instantly changed.

The voice on the other end said only two sentences before Fred covered the mouthpiece and lowered his voice. Sanctum Healing Center. Samanthasomething happened.

Cassian’s shoulders tensed in that instant, a primal instinct flashing beneath his skin.

He said nothing, simply grabbing his jacket and walking out.

His aura in the air instantly solidified, making even Fred instinctively fall silent.

Late at night, the air in the hallway was thick with the acrid smell of disinfectant. The fluorescent lights washed the room with a sickly pale glow.

When Cassian pushed the door open, the ward was heavy with a chaotic mix of scents: medicine, cold sweat, and a concentrated, sour fear.

Samantha, who had been lying down, immediately propped herself up at the sound of the door.

She violently shoved the therapist away, her action almost destructive.

The next second, she ripped the IV needle from the back of her hand, and beads of blood rolled down her skin.

Why did you save me? Just let me die!

The therapist moved forward, but Cassian raised his hand, his voice low but unquestionable. Out.

It wasn’t a shout, but the habitual aura of a superiorunderstated, but instantly obeyed.

The therapist quickly exited the room. The door closed, leaving only the rhythmic beep of the cardiac monitor.

Samantha stood barefoot on the floor, her shoulders shaking like a cornered animal.

Her breathing was ragged, her pheromones spilling out of controlsweet and cloying, yet laced with the desperation of impending death, making one instinctively want to recoil.
