Cassian held Samantha’s injured hand, pressing her fingers back onto the sheet to keep her still.

He didn’t use a sweet, soothing scent to placate her. Instead, he compressed his pheromones into a thin, calm layer, acting as a clear boundary, slowly pulling her breathing back into rhythm.

“Samantha,” he stated, word by word. “You are Algernon’s only stable support. Stop making these choices.”

Hearing that, Samantha’s reservoir of hurt burst open. Her suppressed sobs broke free.

Shoulders shaking, she ripped the old wound open. “Cassian… back then, your grandfather threatened me. He said if I stayed with you, he would strip you of everything–handing the Ironthorn alpha position to your half–brother.”

Gasping, she continued in ragged bursts. “For your future, I agreed to his terms and broke it off with you.”

“But he wasn’t satisfied. Afraid we’d reconnect, he forced me to leave the States–forced me to marry, to bury myself in another life.”

Her voice shook with pain. “I was beaten so badly I miscarried several times over those six years… Algernon was the only one they let stay.”

“Even after all that, I was terrified to come back. I was afraid the moment I appeared, your grandfather would turn his knife on you again.”

She wiped her face, wetting it more. Her voice grew frantic, afraid Cassian would reveal the truth. “I chose everything that happened to me. I never blamed you.”

“I was forced to return, but if your grandfather finds out, he’ll do exactly what he did six years ago: send us away, or give me to someone worse.”

Her eyes filled with sheer terror, choked by the possibility. “Rather than waiting every day to be punished, I’d rather just die!”

With a dull thud, she suddenly dropped to her knees before Cassian.

Her knees hit the floor with a heavy sound.

Cassian’s face twisted in distress. He reached out to pull her up, but Samantha clung to his trousers, gripping them like the last lifeline.

She looked up, tears blurring her face, her voice broken. “Cassian, please… for the sake of what we had… don’t tell your mate about Algernon’s parentage, okay?”

Cassian stood motionless, his eyes shifting uneasily.

The word “explanation” didn’t cross his mind. Only Trista’s likely reaction did–with the mate link fragile and her trust paper–thin, if he released the fact that ‘the pup wasn’t on the roster,‘ he would be handing her the weapon.

He helped Samantha back to the bedside, his voice cold and strained. “Don’t do that.”

Cassian was quiet for a long time, wrestling with a painful dilemma–he couldn’t let his grandfather target Samantha and Algernon, but he couldn’t keep letting Trista be stabbed by the mating contract.

Finally, he spoke, his voice low and icy. “I promise you. I won’t tell.”

Samantha burst into tears of relief. “Cassian, I promise, I won’t bother you anymore, and I won’t let Trista misunderstand us again.”

Cassian nodded distractedly. “Get some rest. I need to step out.”

Cassian moved Samantha aside and quickly left the ward.

Fred, waiting outside the door, had heard every word of their conversation.

Fred dragged Cassian to a corner of the hallway. “Can’t you see she’s manipulating you?”

Cassian said, “Samantha sacrificed too much for me. I can’t refuse her.”

Fred challenged him, “So, are you going to terminate the mating with Trista?”

Cassian shot him a look. “I am not breaking the mating bond with Trista.”
