Chapter 22
Gideon’s POV
I shut the door to my office with a definitive click and threw myself into my chair. I ran my hands through my hair and gave a surprised laugh when I realized they were trembling.
How does she wind me up this much? I closed my eyes and leaned back in my chair, remembering the delectable sounds Avery had made as I’d pinned her in the upstairs hallway. Long minutes had passed, but my body was still responding to hers.
My wolf agreed, She seems more lively lately, and oddly cute. He huffed in the way he did when he was amused.
I tried to calm myself, let my hot blood cool.
I can’t believe I’d almost tried to mark her! I swore. It isn’t like me to lose control like that. There’s just something about her… The way her chin jutted out when she was being stubborn. The look of delight on her face when she’d been digging in the dirt. The way she’d bravely done her best during the Pack Acceptance Ceremony when she’d had little time to prepare…
I am undeniably attracted to her. I groaned. I find myself cheering her on, even when she’s making my life harder!
Well, no more distractions. I had work to do, and thinking about a certain feisty young Luna wasn’t going to get it done any
faster.
I pulled a pack of folders towards me on my desk and began flipping through them mindlessly. I was still distracted, and when the door to my office opened I found I was staring at some report titled ‘Drainage and Leech Field Stagnancy in the Fourth Quadrant’.
Thrilling.
“Yes?” I snapped. I looked up to see Jessica letting herself into my office like she owned the place.
Oh goddess, what now?? I sighed and ran a hand over my face wearily.
“You work so hard.” Jessica purred, leaning across my desk to ensure I had an excellent view down her neckline. While normally I wouldn’t mind a bit of scenery while I worked, I knew she must be here for something more.
The sooner she spits it out, the sooner I can get back to…
Moping? My wolf supplied.
Helpful, thank you. I frowned. I was going to say working.
“What is it?” I growled at Jessica. “I’m busy.”
She blinked at the folder I was holding and narrowed her eyes at me, “Yes, those drainage reports seem very pressing.” she
said, dryly.
I tossed the folder on the desk and crossed my arms, waiting.
“Your fiancee attacked me this afternoon in the mess hall.” Jessica did a fairly convincing act of looking upset. She was an excellent actress. “An Omega had spilled food on me, and when I confronted her, Avery stepped in and threw her food on me as well.”
I slowly swiveled my chair towards the wall to hide my grin. She did WHAT?! Incredible.
Stories of Jessica’s bad behavior had long trickled up to me, much to the consternation of my Beta, her brother.
Because we had no current fulltime Luna, and because her sort of petty mean girl behavior wasn’t severe enough to warrant an Alpha’s attention, there had been little I could do up to this point. I’d hoped she’d grow out of it, but the arrival of Avery sounded like it’d sent her into a frenzy.

If Avery had managed to shut her down, that was very promising. I might finally have a weapon to use to get the female hierarchy of the pack in order once more.
“Are you listening?” Jessica whined. She came around the desk and leaned over the back of my chair, her hands roaming down my chest. “You seem so tense.” Her hands kneaded at my shoulders, “Let me help you relax.”
She shid around to the front of my chait and seated herself on my lap. Normally I might enjoy the attention, but lately I found I had little appetite for Jessica’s particular flavor of company.
