Chapter 337
Avery’s POV

Sebastian’s study was quiet and warm compared to the courtyard. He had sent everyone else away, leaving just the two of us now, sitting across from each other in the armchairs near the fireplace while he dabbed ointment onto my palms with careful, gentle movements.
The ointment stung at first, but quickly cooled the cuts on my skin. I’d scraped them on the ground when the guards pushed me down. Or maybe when I was climbing out the window like a madwoman. The whole night was such a blur that I really wasn’t
sure.

“I’m sorry about the guards,” he said. “They were overzealous.”
“I brought it onto myself by climbing out your bathroom window.”
Sebastian paused and looked at me with an arched brow. “You what?”
I cleared my throat. “I was trying to make a timely escape. Unfortunately, it wasn’t so timely.”
He stared at me for a moment before he went back to applying the ointment. “Can I ask why?”
I watched the firelight move on the wall behind him and tried to decide how much to say. I hadn’t planned on saying anything at all. I hadn’t planned on being here right now. I should have just stayed home.
“There was someone at the event I wasn’t expecting to see,” I said carefully.
Sebastian didn’t respond right away. He smoothed the last of the ointment across my right palm, then set the tin down and reached for the gauze.
“Who?”
“Alpha Gideon.” I sighed and watched as he wrapped my hands. “He’s my… my ex.
Ex felt like a bad way to put it, I wasn’t sure if that was accurate; he was my mate, my lover, the father of my child, my tormentor.

Sebastian finished wrapping my hands and sat back in his chair, studying me. “You know, I’ve been trying to figure you out since I first started researching your
company. There was almost nothing to find.”
“I’m a private person.”

“You’re hiding,” he said matter-of-factly. Or rather, you were. Now, I guess it doesn’t matter, does it? Because the man you were hiding from knows you exist.”
I nodded slowly and looked down at my lap.
“So you’re the one he’s been looking for all these years,” Sebastian said.
“Yeah.” I glanced up. “How did you know?”
“Everyone in the territories knows about it, he said. “The Alpha of Nightwolf who lost his Luna and never recovered. He spends half his time running around in the forest instead of leading his pack.”
I said nothing.
“Look, I’m not going to push you for details if you don’t want to give them,” he said. “Whatever happened between you two is your business. But I want you to know that none of this changes anything on my end. The partnership offer still stands.”
I sighed heavily. “I’m not sure if that’s a good idea. I can’t get involved with him again.”
“Evergreen is nowhere near Nightwolf territory,” he assured me. “Whatever you’re afraid of, I can promise you that Gideon has no reach here. Whatever agreement you and I come to going forward, he has no part in it and no say over it.”
I thought about Sebastian’s offer for a long moment before I shook my head.
“Tonight proved that coming back to the packs isn’t as simple as I thought it was. I had convinced myself that I could do this, and that nothing from my old life would follow me. But it did, on my very first night, no less.” I shot him a watery smile. ” Gideon is ruthless. He’ll stop at nothing to get me back. The safest thing for me to do is to stay in the human lands and cut all ties to the packs.”
“So you’re refusing my offer.”
