I tried to tell myself that it was unhealthy. That even if Gideon wanted me, he was still with Fiona, an eighteen year old girl. I couldn’t look past that.

“Here you go.” The bartender handed me my drink, snapping me from my reverie. “Please enjoy it.”

“Thank you.” I took a sip. It was the perfect amount of sweet and strong, and tasted faintly of mangoes. I took another sip, then another, and before I knew it, I’d finished half the drink.

The bartender must have made it extra strong, because my head was already fuzzy just from that much. But I chalked it up to the fact that I didn’t drink that much alcohol these days, and frankly, I could use the distraction.

So I took another sip.

“Are you listening, Gideon?”

“Hm? Oh, yeah. You were talking about your graduation ceremony.

“Yeah, it’s in a couple of weeks, and I was thinking we could throw a party…”

Fiona’s voice faded into the background again. I listened on a surface level, just in case she asked me for details again, but my mind was elsewhere.
