The Heartless Alpha’s Beloved Luna (Avery and Gideon) novel Chapter 469

Another rogue lunged at me from the side. I released the first one and spun, catching the second mid-air. We went down in a tangle of limbs and teeth, rolling through the mud. It clawed at my face, trying to get to my eyes. I jerked my head back and bit down on its leg, crushing bone and tendon. It howled and tried to pull away, but I didn’t let go until it stopped moving entirely.

I released the rogue I was holding and moved to the next one. This one was bigger, older. It snarled. Lunged. I ducked and came up underneath it, my jaws closing around its belly. I tore upward, and it collapsed with a wet gurgle.

The remaining rogues scattered.

Some ran into the forest, disappearing into the darkness. Others tried to fight back, but Sebastian was whirling around a group of them, sending the rest running and yelping like terrified pups.

When the last one had fled, I stood in the center of the camp, my sides heaving, my wolf still snarling. Blood dripped from my muzzle, mixing with the rain.

Sebastian shifted back to human form, his chest rising and falling rapidly. He looked around the camp. "We need to find her," he said.

I shifted too. “Search those tents,” I said, pointing. “I’ll take these ones.”

Sebastian nodded and took off. I ran over to the nearest tent and poked my head inside. Nothing but a sleeping bag on the hard ground and some rotting meat sitting on a plate. I moved to the next tent, then the next. Most of them were empty. A few had supplies scattered around, some bones, but no Avery.

While Sebastian’s silhouette darted through the camp, I moved to the largest tent at the center. I pulled the flap open and looked around. There was a cot in the corner, a few scattered belongings, and in the center…

A post. With cut ropes and a rusty knife sitting on the ground beside it.

Avery’s scent was all over this tent. It smelled fresh, too, like she had just been here. But she wasn’t.

Someone was in this tent, though. A man, sitting huddled in the corner with his arms raised up over his head in defense.
