The Heartless Alpha’s Beloved Luna (Avery and Gideon) novel Chapter 529

I kept walking, pulling my jacket tighter around myself to ward off the chill. Avery’s scent grew thinner with every step, the forest swallowing it almost as fast as I could find it. I had just begun to lose it, wondering if I had gone in the wrong direction after all, when I heard the sound of a splash, followed by ragged coughs and gasps.

Avery.

I burst through the trees, cursing when I saw Avery at the edge of a dark pond, still in her nightgown, her hair plastered to her skin. She was crawling through the mud, gasping and sputtering, and fell back down, her face going under the shallow surface again.

“Avery!”

I sprinted over, plunging into the shallows. The water was cold enough to punch the air out of me, and she was even colder than that when I scooped her up, her skin icy and clammy. She gasped, clinging to my arms, as I hauled us both up onto the bank.

“Avery. Oh my Goddess, Avery, what happened?”

On the bank, I collapsed with her in my lap. She was shaking so hard her teeth were clacking together, and she looked up at me with wide, unblinking eyes.

“Avery,” I said, shrugging off my coat and wrapping it around her. It was already wet, but it was better than nothing. “What happened? Why were you out here?”

She sputtered, water droplets spraying, and shook her head.

“I-I don’t know. I was dreaming, and then I woke up and I was under the water…” She shuddered. Her fingernails dug into my arms. “I don’t know what happened…”

Tears were slipping down her face now, hot and fast. “Okay. It’s okay. You’re okay.” I pressed my lips to her soaked hair and held her tighter, hoping she couldn’t feel how badly my own hands were shaking. “You’re okay. I’ve got you.”

She nodded against my chest, and for a moment I just held her, rocking her gently in my arms as her breathing went back to normal. She coughed a little, shivering violently, but then, with a trembling hand, she lifted her fingers to her throat and looked up at me.

“Gideon…”

The pendant was sitting at the hollow of her throat.
