The Heartless Alpha’s Beloved Luna (Avery and Gideon) novel Chapter 558

Sebastian’s POV

I stared at him through the window for a long moment.

Ten years old. Standing in the middle of a back road at dusk in his socks, chest heaving, chin set with a certainty most grown men spent their whole lives trying to manufacture.

“I really need your help.”

The engine was still running. I could have driven away. I should have. Everything I had done in the last several weeks pointed to that being the right answer: drive away, keep my head down, let the witch do what the witch had promised, and wait.

I put the car in park instead.

“Get in,” I said.

Bjorn didn’t hesitate. He came around to the passenger side and climbed in, pulling the door shut behind him, and sat with his hands on his knees and looked at me. He looked like her. He’d always looked like her, but sitting this close, it was hard not to notice.

I cleared my throat. “Start talking.”

He did.

He laid it all out: the dream that wasn’t a dream, Avery’s voice coming through the dark. He’d seen her face in the air for a moment that was brief, but it was clear enough to know it was real. He’d heard her say she was in the woods. That the woman back at the house wasn’t her.

And most of all, he heard her say that she needed help.

“How long has she been missing?” I asked when he was finished.

“I don’t know exactly. A few days at least.”

I rubbed my thumb across my jaw, staring through the windshield at the empty road ahead. The last of the evening light was draining out of the sky.

He was telling the truth. I didn’t have to think about it very hard to know that. The witch had told me herself, practically gloating, that she would step in once the pendant had done its work. At the time, I didn’t know this was what she meant. I hadn’t expected any of it.

But maybe that was her whole thing. To keep men like me and Gideon from seeing the truth. Meanwhile, children like Bjorn saw right through it.
