The Heartless Alpha’s Beloved Luna (Avery and Gideon) novel Chapter 560

Avery’s POV

I’d been hunched over the witch’s table for so long that my spine had gone numb. Melissa was still asleep in the chair by the woodstove, the small fire having long since burned down to coals, and the only light I had was a fresh candle I’d found in a drawer and a thin shaft of moonlight through the window.

The base was already done; the silver creeper had been dried and steeped until the scent coaxed itself out. The truth serum flower had been more finicky. It kept separating out no matter what I tried, until I figured out that the trick was heat: low and slow, barely above body temperature.

Finally, I drew the stopper and waved the test strip through the air, then brought it to my nose.

The scent was clean and faintly acrid, like the wet forest. But it would work. It had to.

“Melissa.” I touched her shoulder. “Wake up.”

She stirred, blinking. Her eyes went to the vial and sharpened.

“Is that it?” she asked.

“I think so.” I gestured to her wrist, and she held it out. We both held our breath as I tipped one drop onto the inside of her wrist.

For a second, nothing happened, and I let out a huff.

Back to the drawing—

“Wait,” I whispered. “I see it!”

Melissa looked down at her wrist, furrowing her brow. She didn’t see it, but I did. The light around her was soft, like the light before sunrise, a pale gold glow rising off her skin and spreading outward.

Her aura lasted for about five seconds before it faded.

“What did you see?” she asked.
