Gideon’s POV

I called the pack together in the main hall that night, the same one where we had held every major event and announcement that Nightwolf had seen in the last decade. Word had already gotten around on its own, but I still had to stand up in front of everyone and make it official.

“Avery and I are getting married,” I said simply. I looked over at her, and she smiled up at me, her lips curving to reveal slightly more teeth than I was used to. But I thought little of it and turned to address the crowd once more. “This weekend, Nightwolf will have a Luna again.”

The room went up in cheers. People clapped and banged their hands on tables and turned to each other, embracing and laughing.

Tegan, however, sat silent at the front of it, staring at me. Then staring at Avery. Then at me again. Constantly looking back and forth between the two of us, like he sensed something that I didn’t.

When he met my gaze for the third time, something in his eyes made something in me awaken. A cold, bitter feeling at the back of my mind that I couldn’t explain, and yet somehow, it wouldn’t go away. It hadn’t gone away since I had agreed to all of this.

Hell, it had been there since the night of that banquet in the other pack, when Avery bit me hard enough to draw blood.

Like a constant, nagging thing in my chest that was telling me…

Something. Is. Wrong.

But it made no sense. I was happy; why wouldn’t I be? Avery and I were getting married, again, the very thing I’d been wanting for so long. Our happily ever after was here.

I woke up sometime after midnight to moonlight cutting through the curtains and Avery sitting up beside me, her back to me, perfectly still.

That wasn’t unusual these days. For some reason, she had taken to sitting up in the dark for stretches, not sleeping. I chalked it up to the stress of the wedding on top of everything else. I almost rolled back over and let her be.
