Avery’s POV

Melissa’s foot was getting worse.

“You need antibiotics,” I said as I gently dabbed the ointment onto her foot for the third time that night. Her skin had gone hot and puffy, and every time I touched the area, she winced and gripped the arms of the chair.

“I know.” She shut her eyes, tilting her head back against the chair. “But I can handle it—”

“Mom!”

We both jerked our heads up and looked toward the door, cracked open to let in the cool night air.

“Mooom!”

“Bjorn!” I shot to my feet and raced outside before I could think twice. I hit the door of the hut hard enough that it bounced off the wall behind it, and then I was outside, barefoot on the cold ground, screaming his name into the dark.

“Bjorn! I’m here, baby, I’m here—”

He came out of the trees at a dead sprint, backpack bouncing against his shoulders, flashlight beam swinging wildly across the ground in front of him. The second he saw me he let it fall, still lit, rolling in a slow circle in the dirt, and ran the rest of the way into my arms.

I went down on my knees and held onto him so hard he made a strangled sound against my shoulder.

“You’re really here.” I pulled back just far enough to grab his face in both hands, checking him over the way I had checked Melissa, looking for blood, for bruises, for anything. He was filthy and scratched up and shivering, but whole. “Bjorn, what were you thinking? You could have gotten yourself killed out there!”

“I know. But I found you.” He said it like that settled the matter, like nothing else mattered next to that fact. “I told Dad. He didn’t really believe me, but I knew. I knew that wasn’t you in the house…”

His eyes dampened, and he wiped his nose on his sleeve. “Sebastian said he would help me. But he never showed up.” His face pinched. “So I came alone.”
