Avery’s POV

It took the better part of an hour to carry Sebastian out of that clearing.

Nobody complained about the weight or the pace. Gideon took the front, Colt the back, and I walked between them with Melissa’s arm slung over my shoulders, taking as much of her weight as she’d let me. Bjorn stuck close to my other side, quiet, his dead flashlight still clutched in one hand like he’d forgotten he was holding it.

The Blue Moon followed us the whole way down, huge and bright through the branches. Every time I caught a glimpse of it, that warmth washed over me again, settling at the base of my skull as if a gentle hand was resting against the back of my neck.

She was still watching. I didn’t doubt that anymore.

Gideon had mindlinked ahead the moment the fog lifted off his pack bond, and by the time we broke out of the trees, half of Nightwolf stood waiting at the edge of the grounds with trucks and torches. Tegan reached us first. His eyes went over the body between us, the blood, Melissa’s foot, my hair. A hundred questions crossed his face, but for now, he kept them to himself.

“Trucks are ready,” he said. “Healer’s awake, if you need her.”

“We do,” I said, nodding at Melissa.

Melissa waved us both off. “Just wrap it well enough to survive the drive. I’d rather be treated at home.”

Home. The word seemed to catch up with her a second after she said it, and her eyes drifted back to Sebastian as Gideon and Colt lowered him—we’d wrapped him in Colt’s jacket, which wasn’t much, but it was better than looking at his unblinking eyes—onto the open bed of the nearest truck.

Bjorn sank down onto a bench by the torch line and stared at nothing, and by the time the healer had finished packing Melissa’s foot in clean bandages, he was asleep sitting up, chin on his chest, the flashlight finally slipping out of his fingers into the grass.

Good. He didn’t need to be awake for this part.
