Chapter 105 The Performance

I can’t imagine,Xan said, and it was true. He couldn’t. But he was starting to wonder if Sarah’s version of events was the one that was actually true.

So yes,Sarah continued, I’m going to be vicious. I’m going to be cruel. I’m going to take everything she loves and burn it to ash. And I’m not going to feel bad about it. She stole five years from me. I’m going to steal her entire future.

Xan moved to sit beside her, pulling her into his arms because that’s what she expected. That’s what the role required. We’ll make her pay,he said, the lie tasting like poison on his tongue. I promise.”

Sarah relaxed against him, satisfied. I knew you’d understand. That’s why I love you, Xan. You see what she really is. You know she deserves this.

Do I? Xan thought. Do I know that anymore?

But out loud he just said, Always.

They ate their Thai food and Sarah outlined more of her plan. She wanted to plant false stories in the media. She wanted to hire people to impersonate Elera and create scandals. She wanted to target Elera’s friends, her business associates, anyone who might be a support system.

It was exhausting and terrifying and Xan played along with all of it, making suggestions and nodding in the right places while his mind screamed at him to stop, to tell the truth, to end this before it went too far.

But he didn’t. He couldn’t. Not until he knew for sure what had happened that night five years ago. Not until he had proof that Sarah was lying or proof that she was telling the truth.

So he smiled and held her and pretended to be the devoted boyfriend planning revenge. And hated himself a little more with every passing minute.

After Sarah finally left around midnight, claiming she was tired and needed her medication, Xan stood in his penthouse and felt the walls closing in. He pulled out his phone and typed a message to Andrew Webb: Need the full report faster. Don’t care about cost. Just get me answers.

Webb’s response came back quickly: Working on it. Should have something solid in 48 hours. But Valdris, be careful. People are watching you now.

Xan knew. He could feel the eyes on him, the weight of being monitored. Kieran Nethys knew he was digging. Sarah thought he was completely loyal to her cause. And somewhere in the middle of all these lies and investigations was Elera, probably unaware that her past was about to explode back into her present in the worst possible way.

He thought about warning her. Just sending an anonymous message saying Your father covered up a murder and it’s about to come out.But that would tip his hand, reveal that he was investigating, potentially put both him and Sarah in danger.

So he did nothing. He just stood in his empty penthouse, drink in hand, and wondered how his life had become so complicated. How he’d gone from angry and certain to confused and conflicted. How he’d convinced himself he was the hero of this story when he was starting to suspect he might actually be the villain.

Kieran Nethys was having the best time of his life.
