Chapter 106 The Performance (2)
“But you didn’t know she was publishing under a pseudonym?”
Finished
“No, and that breaks my heart.” Kieran’s voice cracked perfectly, years of practice in boardroom manipulation paying off. “I think she was afraid to tell me. Afraid I’d try to take credit or control her career. And I understand that fear. I wasn’t always the best father. I was too focused on business, on the family name, on things that don’t matter compared to your child’s happiness. I have regrets. So many
regrets.”
“Do you think that’s why she married Drakonius Vex so suddenly? To escape your control?”
Kieran had been ready for this question. “I think my daughter made a choice based on love and security. Mr. Vex is a good man from what I understand. Brilliant, successful, respectful. If she found happiness with him, then I’m grateful. My only wish is that we could have been closer through all of this. That she could have trusted me enough to share her success. But I understand why she didn’t. I have to live with the consequences of my past actions.”
The interview went on for another thirty minutes, with Kieran painting himself as the reformed sinner, the father who’d seen the error of his ways too late. It was a masterclass in manipulation, and by the time the reporter left, she was practically crying herself.
Kieran poured himself a celebratory whiskey. This was perfect. He’d positioned himself as the sympathetic figure, the loving father pushed away by his successful daughter. Public opinion would swing in his favor. People loved a redemption story, loved a parent who admitted their mistakes and wanted to make amends.
And when Elera inevitably refused to reconcile with him publicly, she’d look cold and heartless. The ungrateful daughter who couldn’t forgive her father even when he was trying so hard to change.
It was brilliant. And it was working.
His phone rang. Another interview request, this one from a morning show. National coverage, it has millions of viewers.
“Kieran Nethys speaking,” he answered, already smiling.
“Mr. Nethys, this is Katie Moreno from Good Morning Merica. We’d love to have you on the show tomorrow to talk about your daughter’s revelation and your relationship with her. Would you be available?”
“I’d be honored,” Kieran said. “I want people to understand that despite our difficulties, I love my daughter. I’ve always loved her. And I’m so incredibly proud of the woman she’s become.”
“Wonderful. We’ll send a car at six AM tomorrow. The segment will air live at seven thirty.”
After he hung up, Kieran allowed himself a moment of pure, unadulterated satisfaction. He’d turned a disaster into an opportunity. Elera had thought leaving him, cutting him off, would diminish his power. Instead, she’d handed him a platform bigger than anything he’d ever had.
The Nethys name was back in the spotlight. And this time, he was the star.
