Chapter 211 Hands Off What Is Mine

Kieran jerked, startled, the gun swinging a fraction of an inch off target.

Xan stood there but not in the room with Elera but in the hallway doorway. He was breathing heavily, as if he’d run. He held nothing in his hands, no weapon or taser. Just himself, planted in the doorway, his face a picture of raw, defiant contempt.

Looking for this?Xan taunted, his voice loud and jarring in the tension. He held up his empty hands. Oh, wait, you’ve already got the gun. The big, scary gun. Because that’s all you’ve ever had, isn’t it, Kieran? Money, threats, guns. You’ve never actually had to be anything. You’re just a suit with a finger on the trigger.

It was a distraction. A stupid, simple, beautiful distraction.

Kieran’s attention snapped fully to Xan, his rage finding a new, familiar target. You,he snarled, the gun now pointing squarely at Xan’s chest. You pathetic, sniveling turncoat. I should have buried you with the Lyros girl’s parents.

Probably,Xan agreed, taking a step into the room, putting himself fully in the line of fire. He was drawing Kieran’s aim away from Drakonius, away from Elera. But you didn’t. You kept me around

because you needed a puppet who looked good in a tuxedo. Joke’s on you. The puppet learned how to cut his own strings.”

ライ

It was the opening. The splitsecond of diverted focus.

Elera didn’t throw the scalpel like an action hero. She didn’t shout. She simply raised her arm and, with the practiced, unthinking motion of a surgeon making a precise incision, flicked her wrist.

The scalpel flew.

It wasn’t meant for the heart. It wasn’t meant to kill. Elera NethysVex, for all her fury, was not a killer. She was a solver of problems.

The razorsharp blade spun once in the air and embedded itself with a sickening thunk in the back of Kieran’s right handthe hand holding the gun.

Kieran screamed. It was a high, shocked sound of pure, animal pain. His fingers spasmed open. The gun clattered to the floor, skidding across the tiles towards Lin.

For a second, Kieran stared at his own hand, at the scalpel handle protruding from it, the blade buried deep in the muscle between his knuckles. Blood welled around it, dripping onto the floor. He looke utterly bewildered, like a child who couldn’t understand where the pain came from.

Then the pain fully registered, and he screamed again, clutching his wounded hand to his chest, stumbling backward.

Xan didn’t hesitate. He lunged forward, and didn’t aim for the gun, but for Kieran. He tackled him around the waist, driving him to the ground. They landed in a heap near the shattered sink, Kieran howling in pain and fury, Xan grunting with the effort of pinning him.

Get off me! You traitorous worm! I’ll kill you! I’ll kill all of you!

Finished:

Yeah, yeah,Xan grunted, struggling to get an arm around Kieran’s neck. You and what hand?

Elera was already moving back to Drakonius. Lin, the gun!she barked.

Lin had already scooped up the weapon. He trained it on the struggling pair on the floor, his expression unreadable. Cease struggling, Mr. Nethys,he said, his voice flat. Or I will be forced to consider you an active threat.

But the fight was already going out of Kieran. The shock, the blood loss from his hand, the sheer physical and emotional exhaustion of the night, were overwhelming him. His struggles grew weaker, his curses dissolving into pained, wheezing sobs.
