Chapter 83 New Threats

“Maybe,” he admitted. “But at least I’m honest about my feelings now. Can you say the same?” His eyes flicked to Drakonius. “Or is this marriage just another one of your performances? Another mask? How do we know this isn’t just the next chapter in your very creative life?”

Drakonius moved so fast Elera barely saw it coming. One second Xan was standing there smirking, the next Drakonius had him by the front of his tuxedo, pulling him close.

“Listen to me very carefully,” Drakonius said, his voice quiet but absolutely lethal. “My wife is not a performance. My marriage is not a mask. And if you ever, ever question her integrity again, I will make it my personal mission to destroy everything you’ve ever built, brick by brick, until there’s nothing left but dust and bankruptcy. Do you understand me?”

Xan’s smirk faltered. Up close, facing down Drakonius Vex in full protective fury mode, he looked less confident. “I was just…”

“You were just leaving,” Drakonius said. “You and your damaged little puppet. And you’re going to stay away from my wife. You’re not going to contact her, follow her, send her threatening emails, or engineer any more convenient fires. You’re going to forget she exists. Because if you don’t, I promise you, the only story anyone will be writing about you is a cautionary tale about what happens when you cross a line you can’t uncross.”

He released Xan with a slight shove. Xan stumbled back, his face red, his pride clearly wounded. Sarah grabbed his arm, steadying him, her expression unreadable.

“You think you’ve won,” Sarah said, her eyes fixed on Elera. “You think revealing your little secret makes you untouchable. But we know things too. Things about your past. Things about that night.”

“What night?” Elera asked, genuinely confused.

Sarah smiled, a cold, creepy smile. “You’ll remember. Eventually. And when you do, you’ll wish you’d stayed hidden.”

Then she turned and pulled Xan away, disappearing into the crowd.

Elera stood there, shaking slightly. “What was that about? What night?”

“I don’t know,Drakonius said grimly. “But we’re going to find out. Come on. Let’s get you out of here before anyone else decides to make more threats.”

They made it to the exit and into the waiting car. The second the door closed, cutting off the chaos outside, Elera felt like she could breathe again.

“That was insane,” she said, her hands shaking as the adrenaline wore off. “That was completely insane

“That was incredible, Drakonius corrected. He was looking at her like she’d hung the moon “You were incredible. Standing up there, owning who you are, taking your power back. Llera, 11le stopped. seeming to struggle for words. “I don’t have words And I’m married to someone who makes a living with words, so that’s saying something.”

Elera laughed, slightly hysterical. “Are you really okay with this? With me being Raven! With me hiding it from you?”

Okay with it?” He looked at her like she was crazy. “Elera, I’m married to the most brilliant doctor I’ve ever met and the most gifted writer of her generation. I’m the luckiest man alive. The only thing I’m not okay with is that you felt like you had to hide it. Like I wouldn’t see the value in it.”
