The Heiress He Underestimated novel Chapter 84

Chapter 84 New Threats (2)

“Drakonius,” Elera said slowly, “we just kissed in front of four hundred people. A real kiss and not that peck we did on our wedding night. A kiss that’s probably going to be on the cover of every magazine tomorrow. And you think we’re still in a marriage of convenience?”

He blinked at her. “I…I know… you kissed me back. I didn’t want to assume…”

“Oh my gosh,” Elera said, and she started laughing. She couldn’t help it. Here was this brilliant, powerful man, who’d just threatened to destroy Xan’s entire life, and he was worried about overstepping boundaries in their fake marriage. “You’re an idiot.”

“I’m sorry?” He looked genuinely offended.

“A brilliant, wonderful, possessive idiot,” Elera clarified. She stepped closer to him, so close she had to tilt her head back to look at his face. “I liked it when you threatened Xan. I liked it when you grabbed him. I liked it when you called me your wife like you meant it. Because this stopped being a business arrangement somewhere around the time you gave me a bracelet that monitors my heartbeat and you stayed up all night holding my hand when I was scared.”

“Oh,” Drakonius said quietly. His eyes were doing that thing where they looked like storms about to break. “So when I acted like a jealous, possessive husband…”

“I liked it,” Elera confirmed. “A lot. Please do it again sometime. Preferably when Xan is around to see it.”

A slow smile spread across his face. “You’re saying this marriage isn’t fake anymore.”

“I’m saying it was never really fake,” Elera said. “We just both pretended it was because we were too scared to admit what we were actually feeling.”

“And what are we feeling?” he asked, his hands coming up to frame her face.

“I don’t know about you,” Elera said, her heart hammering. “But I’m feeling like I want to kiss my husband again. For real this time and not for cameras or crowds. Just because I want to.”

“Well, Drakonius said, his thumb brushing across her cheekbone. “I’m feeling like I want to kiss my wife who is apparently a literary genius and has been letting me ramble about her own books like an idiot for weeks.

“You weren’t an idiot,” Elera protested. “You were adorable.”

“Adorable,” he repeated flatly. “I’m a pharmaceutical tycoon dying of a genetic disease. I’m not adorable.”

“You’re adorable when you talk about books,” Elera insisted. “You get this look in your eyes like you’re seeing something magical. It’s very cute.”
