Lilian’s expression sharpened. “Interesting. It sounds like there really is a secret buried out there. Tell Ryan to push them as hard as he can. Whatever resources or specialized equipment they need, get it.” A fragment of a memory flickered at the edge of her mind again. It was something vital, but it vanished before she could catch it.
“I’m on it,” Karina promised.
Lilian dropped her pen into the drawer, stood up, and grabbed her bag. “I’m heading out. Call me if anything urgent crops up.”
Karina checked the time. “You’re leaving now?”
Lilian nodded. “I have that sit–down with Rowan this afternoon. I want to see exactly what he thinks he’s going to accomplish.”
“You want me to come with you?” Karina asked, her eyes narrowing.
Lilian let out a sharp, mocking laugh. “Relax. What’s he going to do to me in a public place? At most, he’ll try to lean on me with my identity. If he wants to use who I am as leverage, fine, but he’d better be prepared for the fallout when I decide to hit back.”
Looking at the wicked glint in Lilian’s eyes, Karina actually felt a pang of pity for Rowan. Of all the people to mess with, he had to pick this little demon. At this rate, the winner of this war was far from decided.
Over at Empire Group, sunlight filtered through the floor–to–ceiling windows, casting a quiet glow over Sebastian’s dark hair. He sat behind his desk, eyes fixed on his laptop screen, his expression unreadable. His fingers flew across the keyboard with clinical precision, a faint, dangerous curve touching his lips.
A knock at the door broke his concentration. Unno walked in and placed a folder on the desk. “Sir, we have the latest results from the survey on that plot of land.”
Sebastian stopped what he was doing and opened the file. As he read through the findings, his eyes widened in genuine shock. “Are they certain?”
“It’s a preliminary deduction,” Unno explained. “Even the specialists are having a hard time believing the data. They’ve started a second round of inspections just to be absolutely sure there’s no error.”
Sebastian stared at the report, his mind racing. If this theory held water, that plot of land wasn’t just valuable, it was a goldmine. Every square inch would be worth a fortune, exactly as Lilian had predicted. If Skyreach held onto this, their growth wouldn’t just be a step up; it would be a leap into a completely different league.
“Tell them to double the workforce,” Sebastian ordered. “I don’t care what it costs. I want the final results as fast as humanly possible. We cannot afford a mistake on this.”
“Understood,” Unno said, turning to hurry out.
Sebastian looked back at the data, still stunned by Lilian’s luck. She’d managed to turn a crisis into a potential miracle. He doubted she even knew the full extent of what was hidden beneath that soil; she was likely just operating on her memories from her previous life, knowing the area would eventually boom.
But as he thought about the Sorens‘ recent desperation, his eyes turned icy. Did Robert know? Was that why the old man was so hell–bent on clawing the land back?
