The Heiress’ Return: Six Brothers at Her Beck and Call (Wynter Quinnell) novel Chapter 2039

After a few minutes, the keyboard stuttered to silence.

"Boss, it's done!" Wolf piped up.

Wynter gave a slight nod, her eyes drifting to the ventilation duct above as she spoke to Dalton. "You and Wolf get out of there first."

Dalton gave her a sideward glance. "And leave you here?"

Wynter's gaze was calm and detached. "Barry said he'd sent men to verify, so news will come back soon. These people are armed. Just in case, it's better to have you two get out first. Go forward along the passage. Someone will meet you at the exit."

While she spoke, she stacked chairs until one fit neatly under the ventilation grate. It was just big enough to slip through.

Dalton's eyes darkened. "Alright. I'll wait for you outside. If anything happens, nothing will survive this place."

Wynter glanced back. "Relax. What could possibly happen to me?"

She then turned to Wolf. "Get Mr. Leprechaun out of here."

Elsewhere, Krugen was finished with the last scientist and, as if it were the most ordinary chore, tossed the body into the sea. Most of the armed men were posted at the lab, which left gaps in the compound. This was the chance he needed.

He strolled along, then, when there were few people, cut through the corridors toward the northwest armory. Two guards stood at the door, and Krugen approached them casually.

One guard raised a hand to stop him. "Mr. Krugen, you can't just…"

Krugen smirked. "The boss is my father. Is there any place on his turf that I'm not allowed?"

The guard waved weakly. "It's not that. The boss told us…"

Before he could finish, Krugen had already moved up to their side, quickly knocking them out.

He flung the door open and slipped inside. Racks of guns, munitions, shells, and grenades crowded the room. The plan was that he must not let these weapons leave this place.

At the base, Barry sat happily at the monitors, red wine in hand. Suddenly, the screens flashed for a beat and then returned to normal. He thought it was just a power glitch and didn't worry about it.

Just then, a man burst into the room. "Sir, they're impostors!"

"What?" Barry snapped upright, and the wine in his hand fell to the ground. "Did you confirm the information?"

The man nodded. "I tried calling, but they said they couldn't reach Richie Millard…"

Barry's eyes darkened. "They dare lie to me? Get everyone. We're going to the lab!"

On the other hand, Wynter wasn't the least bit worried. She had turned a chair to face the lab door and sat down.

Soon, the door slammed open. Barry stood in the doorway, cold and fierce. "You impostors! So, I was right. You're Cascadians!"

Wynter smiled. "So what?"

"Where are the other two?" Barry scanned the room. "Where did they go?"

Wynter's expression remained unchanged. "I sent them away. You're not as stupid as I thought. Your timing matched my plan."

Barry's face tightened. "No… Krugen! He's in this with you guys!"

At that instant, an explosion rang out from the armory.

"Go! See what's happened!" Barry barked, signaling two men toward the armory.

Wynter rose. "He's your son, but you broke his heart through and through, so he came to help me."

Barry's voice chilled. "So… Krugen freed the scientists. Someone said he was with certain people before, but I didn't expect it to be you."

"Your realization came a little too late." Wynter's gaze was steady.

Barry's fury made him snap, "I'll kill you!"

"You'd best not act rashly. You spent blood and sweat to get these files. One wrong move, and they vanish." Wynter held the laptop in her hand.

"Even if I lose those research data, I'll make sure you all die a horrible death!" Right as he said that, he raised his hand to level his gun at Wynter.

But at that moment, he suddenly realized that his wrist couldn't muster any strength.

Wynter quickly closed the distance. She snatched his weapon, training the muzzle on him. "You're way too slow."

At a distance, a gun could be fast. But in close quarters, Wynter was much faster.

While they were talking, she had closed the distance between them. As he pulled the trigger, she'd already slipped a silver needle into the crook of his wrist, draining the strength from his hand.

Barry stared at her in disbelief. He had never seen someone with such quick reflexes. "You… You're a monster!"

"Everyone says that," Wynter answered, then fixed the room with a look. "If any of you want your boss to live, put your guns down."

A voice cut through from behind, "Go ahead and kill the boss if you can."

It was Cobra. The men parted to give him a path.

Cobra grinned. "Kill him. Let me see if you've got the guts for it."

Wynter matched his gaze. "You want me to kill him so you can usurp his position with my help, right? Quite the ambitious one, aren't you?"

Cobra crossed his arms. "So what? I've been second-in-command for years while he sat at the top. He's old. It's time for the younger generation to take over."

Then, he looked at Wynter again. "I'll ask you one last time—will you shoot him or not?"

Wynter said nothing, only watching him in silence. She knew if she didn't pull the trigger, Cobra's men would open fire at them.

She counted the distances in her head. Without guns, she could pick them off one by one. But with those guns in their hands, everything changed.

Cobra sneered and barked, "Open fire!"

Right after the command left his mouth, Wynter yanked Barry sideways. A bullet sliced past his cheek, burning hot.

Cobra's voice rose. "What are you doing? He's done monstrous things. Why would you bother saving him?"

Wynter ducked behind a plank. "His crimes should be judged by law, not by you."

Besides, Barry was Krugen's father. Without Krugen's help, the rescue would not have gone so smoothly. So, she couldn't let him find Barry's corpse upon returning.
