Seraphina didn’t ask where. She assumed it was a luxury mall. Nolan was unpredictable, but he sometimes took her shopping and spoiled her with gifts.

Apart from his cruel, twisted methods, he wasn’t a bad partner.

Still, she preferred Elias. Just thinking his name made her chest ache.

The car left Azure Peak’s city limits. Seraphina glanced out the window, a flicker of confusion crossing her face.

Nolan glanced at her now and then. His usually stern face had softened completely, his eyes gentle, even bright with a warm smile.

It was nothing like his usual self.

Seraphina’s heart twisted with uncase.

She grew more nervous until the car stopped at the foot of a mountain.

She stared at him, puzzled.

A thought crossed her mind, and she forced down her panic, staying quiet. She dared not say too much one wrong word could be dangerous.

He led her deeper into the village. Seraphina’s anxiety grew.

Nolan stopped at a cliff edge. His fierce gaze softened completely.

“Back then, the Lane family was torn apart by war. My parents, my brother, my sister–all dead. I was left hanging from a tree on this cliff, my body broken, watching my blood drip away. I thought I’d bleed out

and die.”

His voice cracked. He turned to Seraphina.

“But you appeared.”

Nolan pulled her into his arms.
