Chapter 42 Felix’s Condition Stabilizes

Leo froze for a second at the announcement. Then he remembered what had happened to Elias last time -how he’d been injured, and how Stella had helped. It clicked into place. He immediately stepped aside. and gestured for her to enter.

Miss Shaw, please, right this way.

Stella gave a small nod and walked through the door.

Tess followed close behind, medical bag in hand.

Jasper, can’t you find it in your heart to forgive your father?

Just turn around. Look at me. Once. That’s all I’m asking.”

Felix’s voice, weak and pleading, drifted from inside the room.

Jasper stood just outside his father’s door, his back rigidly turned to him.

No matter how Felix begged, he refused to face him. Refused to even look.

Stella’s arrival drew the attention of everyone in Moore Manor.

They all turned to study her, but her gaze landed on Jasper.

Their eyes met. Jasper’s narrowed, studying her intently, not blinking.

Miss Shaw.

Leo’s voice pulled her back to the present.

She didn’t notice that the simple words Miss Shawhad softened something in Jasper’s scrutinizing expression, just for a moment.

Leo, who’s this?

Amber pointed at Stella, confusion written all over her face.

Aunt Amber, she’s the Master Healer’s apprentice.

The room went quiet. Shock rippled through the Moore family.

Her? You’re telling me she’s qualified?Amber’s brow furrowed, skepticism dripping from every word.

Exactly! Leo, she looks like she hasn’t even finished undergrad.”

Your grandpa’s health is fragile. If she screws up and makes things worse, who’s going to take responsibility?

Where’s the actual Master Healer? Why didn’t he come? Whatever he’s charging, the Moores can afford it.”

Kid, don’t bite off more than you can chew. Don’t ruin your reputation chasing clout. The Moore family isn’t a joke.

Never mind the Mooreseven the Master Healer himself isn’t someone you want to cross. Claiming to be his apprentice? When that blows up in your face, it’s going to be embarrassing.”

Through the barrage of doubt, Stella stood motionless, her expression cool and unbothered.

Leo, if she’s treating your grandpa, I’m against it.

Amber’s position was clear.

Aunt.

I’m not putting my father’s life in her hands.

Leo felt the pressure building. He glanced at his watch, anxious.

Where was Elias?

The moment he’d seen Stella, he’d known convincing the family would be an uphill battle.

Having Elias there would make all the difference.

Besides, just because she says she’s the Master Healer’s apprentice, that makes it true? Where’s the proof? These days, young women will say anything for attention.

Amber’s words drew murmurs of agreement from most of the family.

Stella checked the time. Her voice was calm, unhurried. The longer you keep me standing here, the longer your father suffers.

Felix’s suffering? Anyone with eyes can see that.”

The mockery washed over her. She didn’t flinch. She was used to this.

She exchanged a glance with Tess, who immediately produced various medical credentials. It did little to sway the room.

Miss Shaw, credentials aren’t exactly hard to come by these days. Money buys anything.

Exactly.”

Leo’s face darkened.

Stella?

Isn’t that the girl from the convent who’s been all over the news lately?

She knows medicine? That’s a joke, right? Leo, have you lost your mind, actually buying into this?

I think she’s a total fraud. Some kid who grew up in foster care, probably wants to feed Felix sugar water

and call it a cure.”

The comments turned uglier. Leo’s patience snapped. Enough. Is this how the Moore family behaves? Harassing someone who came here to help?

Miss Shaw took her SATs at thirteen and got into Azure Peak University on a full ride.

Oh, the math prodigy? She studied math. Not medicine. Totally different field. Who in their right mind would let her treat anyone?

Stella glanced at her phone again, then swept her gaze across the room. Are we doing this or not?

Miss Shaw, I’m sorry. I-
