The Human Among Wolves (Aurora) novel Chapter 415

Chapter 415

For a while neither of us said anything.

The house was silent again.

Outside, the wind moved gently through the trees.

My body felt heavy now, the exhaustion finally catching up with me completely.

Just as I was starting to drift toward sleep, Zayn’s quiet voice broke the darkness.

“Rory?”

“Yeah?”

“…You did good today.”

I didn’t answer right away.

But after a moment, I whispered back softly.

“Goodnight, Zayn.”

A hand touched my shoulder.

Soft.

Careful.

But enough to pull me out of sleep.

My eyes opened slowly, my mind still thick with exhaustion, and for a brief second I expected to see the dim bedroom ceiling of the house we were staying

Instead, I was staring at something completely different.

Familiar walls.

Soft morning light spilling through tall windows.

My desk.

My bed.

My room.

Back at the academy.

My heart skipped.

And then I saw him.

Zade.

He was sitting at the edge of my bed like he belonged there, one hand still resting lightly on my shoulder. His dark eyes were watching me carefully, that same sharp, calculating gaze that had always made it impossible to tell what he was truly thinking.

“Glad you’re safe, beautiful,” he said.

The moment the words left his mouth, I pushed myself upright.

My blanket slid down to my lap as I looked around the room again, making sure of what I was seeing.

Everything looked exactly the same as the last time I had been here.

The same furniture.

The same sunlight filtering through the window.

The same quiet stillness of the academy in the early morning.

Except for the fact that Zade was sitting on my bed.

Again.

I turned my attention back to him.

“Why are you in my dream?”

Zade leaned back slightly, bracing his hands behind him on the mattress like this was the most casual thing in the world.

“Well,” he said lightly, “I tried getting into Zayn’s dream first.”

My eyes narrowed slightly.

“And?”

“He’s blocking me again.”

Of course he was.

Zade shrugged faintly.

“And since I know the two of you are together right now, I figured this was the easier option.”

I folded my arms across my chest.

“So you broke into my dream instead.”

“Borrowed,” he corrected.

I ignored that.

“What do you want, Zade?”

For a moment the casual expression slipped from his face.

Not completely.

Just enough that the shift in his tone became noticeable.

“Tell Zayn something for me.”

I didn’: like the way he said that.

“What?”

Zade straightened slightly, his eyes sharpening as he looked directly at me.

“Our father is back in the kingdom.”

My breath caught.

“What?”

“He arrived a few hours ago,” Zade continued calmly, though there was something darker under his voice now. “And he was.

“He didn’t say why,” Zade added. “Not to me. But I overheard enough to understand what’s happening.”

My hands clenched slightly in the blanket.

“What did you hear?”

Zade watched me for a second,

Then he said quietly,

“He hired someone.”

The words felt like ice sliding down my back.

“A hitman.”

My heart stopped.

“On you.”

The room seemed to go silent around us.

“What?” I breathed.

Zade’s expression didn’t change.

“He was informed about your escape almost immediately,” he said.

“How does he even know where I am?”

“He doesn’t,” Zade said. “Not exactly.”

That didn’t help.

“But he knows you’re alive,” he continued. “And that you escaped.”

My chest tightened.

“And that’s enough for him.”

For a moment neither of us spoke.

The quiet in the dream room suddenly felt heavy.

Dangerous.

Then I forced myself to ask,
