Ray got drunk. Really drunk. I was the butt of all his jokes, forced to stand beside him while he grabbed me whenever he liked and forced my face this way and that way.
Now, we’re in his bedroom. The guests have all left because he abruptly decided that he wanted them gone, and now, it’s just the two of us.
I know what he said about not touching me but that doesn’t necessarily mean that I believe him, especially when he’s drinking this much. Right now, he’s pouring himself another drink and all I can do is stand by and watch him destroy himself, hoping that he won’t turn his attention to me because if he does, I won’t be able to do a thing to stop him.
He locked the door. The key is in the pocket of his jeans.
I’m terrified of what will happen next. With each passing hour, I feel the effects of the silver less and less, but I don’t know how long this is going to last or when the chains will be put back on.
Suddenly, Ray turns around and his drink spills over the rim of his glass. He zeroes in on me, then smiles. He starts toward me and I back away so quickly that my back hits the wall.
“If you touch me, I’ll kill you!”
Ray laughs like I just told him the funniest joke in the world. “How, Little Nocturn? Hm? How are you going to kill me? Ryder isn’t here to save you.”
I try to put more distance between us but he catches my wrist and tugs my arm sharply. I crash into his body so hard that it knocks the air right out of my lungs.
“Do you know what he did?” he whispers in my ear. “He challenged his father yesterday. Everyone has heard about it. Imagine that. A son challenging his own father.”
What? Ryder did that?
Ray tilts his head to the side and watches me intently while I try to come to terms with what I just heard. I’m relieved that Ryder is alive, but at the same time, I can’t help but worry about him.
Challenging his father…what if he ends up dead?
“You’re right to be worried,” Ray whispers. “He’s gonna die.”
“No.”
He lets out a low laugh. “Yes, he will. And if he dies, you die, too, my face. I flinch, but there’s nowhere to go. “You might not die. take you out of his hands. I’d hate to lose you so soon.”
lon’t you?” He raises his hand and brushes my hair out of depends. As for me, I hope you’ll live. I paid a fortune to
His fingers reach my collar bones. All I can do is try to twist my neck away from him so it’s out of his reach.
“You know, there’s something about you. I can’t resist you. I see what Drexel saw. I wouldn’t trade my pack for you, but I’d sure have my fun.”
He presses his nose against the side of my face and I close my eyes, wishing this could just end.
Ray backs away, inhales sharply, then downs the rest of his drink. “Time for playtime is over for today.”

He wraps a tight arm around my waist and carries me out of his room I try to free myself by twisting my body this way and that; and using what’s left of my strength to make progress. Even though Ray is drunk and stumbling, he’s much stronger than me in this state of mine.
And when we get to the room, I find the maids there, all of them wearing gloves.
It’s time to get back in the chains.
Words can’t describe how dejected I feel all of a sudden. Then again, I should never have assumed that he’d let me run free without them. Ray knows that, at some point, the silver would pass from my system and I’d recover enough to shift and bite his leg off.
The difference is unbelievable. My insides feel bruised. I lose all he strength in my legs all over again, but I try not to show it because Ray is leaning against the door frame, watching me.
The women step away and he takes over. I keep my eyes on his face as he approaches, even though I want to let myself fall to the ground because I can’t take this anymore.
“Don’t look so sad. We’ll have more fun tomorrow. There’ll be-
Ray cuts himself off because he reaches for the chains with his bare hands. He doesn’t have his leather gloves. The burn is instantaneous and he draws back while staring at his red hand. His reaction to silver was more violent than mine.
A smile tugs at the corners of his lips as he stares back at me. “Nocturn power. A beauty, isn’t it? I don’t know how you’re still standing with those on. What a waste of power.”
