The Indifferent Ex-Husband Heartstrings in the Mall of Fate (Brandon and Sophia) novel Chapter 760

“So what happened after that?”

Sophia’s voice was barely a whisper. Her eyes had turned red and watery, filled with apology, guilt, and a deep ache for him.

“After that…” Brandon’s gaze drifted into the distance, as if he could see straight through the night to that painful memory.

“You didn’t even give me a chance to say goodbye. You begged me, through tears, to leave you alone. You said you truly wanted a fresh start, that trying to fit into my world was too much. Everyone around me, myself included, made you feel out of place. You asked me to stop disrupting your life.” His voice grew rough, barely above a murmur. The memory of her tearful pleading still felt like someone squeezing his heart, leaving it bruised and aching.

She had never begged him for anything—not like that. But that day, with softest desperation, she forced him to do the cruelest thing.

He’d been furious—hurt beyond words—but in the end, completely helpless. He couldn’t bear to see her in pain, yet he couldn’t let her go either.

When you’re pushed to the edge like that, all you want is to hold on, even if it means ignoring her suffering, ignoring her pleas—just clinging to each other, no matter how much it hurts, right up to the bitter end.

But every harsh thought dissolved the moment he saw her tears.

“I went to get you some soup. I knew the moment I stepped out of that hospital room, you’d vanish,” Brandon said, glancing at her and shaking his head with a bittersweet smile. “You’d just come out of surgery, and I couldn’t let you leave in such a weak state. I told you to stay put, and you listened. But the next minute, while I was taking a phone call, you left me a goodbye note and disappeared. Then you went straight to the university to arrange your leave of absence.”

“I’m sorry…” Sophia’s apology slipped out before she could stop it. Even now, she couldn’t recall what she felt when she decided to cut everything off so abruptly.

“It’s me who should be sorry.” Brandon gently took her hand. “I shouldn’t have disturbed you back then. The baby, your studies—they were both new beginnings for you, things you’d pinned your hopes on. And you nearly gave them up for me. So while you were in school, I didn’t dare reach out. I never expected that choice to cost me the chance to watch Theresa grow up, to be there for her.”

He knew exactly how much the baby meant to Sophia.
