It didn't just torture the woman he loved most; it tortured him, and everyone else who cared about her.
Joseph's final statement earned Vivica's complete agreement. She let out a long, heavy sigh and nodded softly. "I agree... I never want to do this again."
No matter how profound a mother's love was, the physical torment was simply too agonizing to repeat.
"Go back to sleep. The doctor said you need as much rest as possible," Joseph said softly, his heart aching as he stroked the top of her head. He lifted her hand, kissed her knuckles, and gently coaxed her to close her eyes.
And so, Joseph practically took on the role of a professional nurse. He fed her water, spoon-fed her meals, helped her turn over, changed her clothes, gave her sponge baths, and even cleaned her intimately—he insisted on doing every single thing himself.
Although they had hired top-tier nurses, Vivica's extreme physical state made the nurses overly cautious, afraid to handle her too roughly. Joseph's strong, steady build actually made him far better suited to support her weight safely.
The days dragged on, harder and requiring more meticulous care than ever.
Thankfully, this agonizing routine didn't last too long.
During another ultrasound, the doctor happily announced that the twins now weighed five point three pounds and four point three pounds. Although they still hadn't hit the standard weight for full-term babies, the risks of them surviving outside the womb had plummeted drastically.
Unable to bear watching his wife suffer a moment longer, Joseph wanted the babies delivered immediately.
During this entire period, neither of them had gotten a solid night's sleep. He had to help her shift positions countless times a day. Whenever he had a spare minute, he was massaging her legs, trying—and often failing—to fight off the severe edema swelling her lower extremities.
But instead of trying to persuade his wife directly, he called in the heavy artillery: Quintina.
As an OB/GYN and Vivica's best friend, her words carried far more weight.
"Vivica, you've held on perfectly. Let's deliver them tomorrow. We even checked the calendar for you—it's an auspicious day!" Quintina coaxed with a bright smile.
Vivica was a bit speechless. She offered a tired smile. "You doctors believe in that stuff?"
"We doctors believe in a lot of things. As long as it brings good energy, we're all for it," Quintina said earnestly, squeezing her hand to sell the pitch.
Afraid Quintina wouldn't be enough, Joseph even bribed their son.
Wearing his little hospital gown, Chaim came in to visit his mother. He grabbed her hand and pouted, "Mommy, tell my little brother and sister to come out soon. I want them to play with me."
Vivica smiled adoringly. "Who told you it was a brother and a sister?"
"Grandma did."
Vivica gently stroked her son's cheek and corrected him, "Actually, it's two little brothers."
"Huh? Two brothers?" Chaim froze, his tiny brows pulling together in a frown. "But I wanted a little sister."
Sigh...
