“Welcome to the promotion competition to become New Moon Estingias,” the instructor announced in front of us, a group of roughly twenty girls.
“Behind me lies the Forest of Laments, a place even the most experienced Estingias respect. You will have one day to cross it and reach the ruins at its center.”
The tension in the air rose.
I had never heard anyone talk about this section of the pack before, but seeing the mist seeping out from between those dark trees made goose bumps rise all over my skin.
“In addition, you will not be allowed to take your slaves with you. They will be waiting for you at the ruins,” she announced, catching us off guard.
“What?! That’s not fair. We had strategies prepared with our slaves!” one of the Estingias protested, but she fell silent right away under the instructor’s hard stare.
“The ones meant to rise in power here are not your slaves. You are. A Dark Estingia who depends on a man is a disgrace, Ms. Clever.” she told the girl, cutting off any possible rebellion.
Then she drew in a breath and walked toward the edge of the clearing, where the twisted line of trees began.
“Tomorrow, anyone who is not at the ruins before the sun kisses the grass… is disqualified. And one more thing….” she added, taking another step until the fog almost swallowed her.
“Anything goes when it comes to winning, and your entire group of three does not necessarily have to reach the finish line for you to qualify.”
With those words, her cold eyes swept over all of us.
Then she turned her back and disappeared into that Forest of Laments, which really did make you want to cry.
The groups split up right away, throwing each other challenging little looks full of hidden danger.
Of course, Morgan and Arlene were together with another girl, and they gave us a mocking look.
Especially Morgan, showing off her golden sword while glancing at the sheath that hid mine at the side of my uniform.
I turned to face Blaze.
“Wish me luck…” I said softly.
“You won’t need it, because I know you’ll reach the finish line, and I’ll be waiting for you there, my lady,” he said, taking a step forward and lowering his head until his muzzle almost brushed my nose.
His golden eyes were turning wild.
“Remember what we practiced. Remember what we lived through in the blue forest. You are not the Isidora from the beginning anymore. You are powerful. Remember… don’t let emotion blind your mind. Cold and lethal.”
His fingers rose to my temple in a fleeting caress, and my chest filled with strength.
Despite our recent arguments, I was still fighting to show him what I could become.

“I’ll make it to you… don’t doubt that.”
With that conviction, I finally entered the forest with the girls.

From the moment we crossed through that heavy mist, the air felt impossible to breathe. It was the kind of feeling that squeezed your chest and made you lower your defenses.
“Girls, stay alert. I hear something moving, like it’s dragging itself….”
I told them the truth. We could barely see each other.
“I brought a rope. Let’s tie it around our waists, or we could get lost,” Karla suggested.
So that was what we did, staying alert to everything around us the whole time.
