The cave was tight and narrow, which made moving forward dangerous because we could easily be blocked in.
1 started to fear an ambush, but I let a thread of my power slip out ahead of me, feeling around for any danger.
When I stepped into a more open gallery. I breathed a little easier, but I could hear those women’s voices nearby.
I signaled Mikaela so we could watch them through a ledge that connected the two caves.
We were above them, crouched down and trying to hide our auras, but we knew we would be discovered very soon.
“Just make the trap already and let’s leave her here!” one of them snapped, pointing at Karla, who was still gagged and tied up, fighting to free herself.
“But… but Arlene told us to wait….”
“Are you an idiot? Arlene only wants to use us as bait so the beast that lives here leaves its lair and she can take the secret route!”
They started arguing among themselves, nervous and unsure what to do.
From their words, we figured out that Arlene had supposedly gotten a map, and that through this system of caves, there was a way to reach the ruins.
But of course… without even going deeper, I could tell this place was full of predators.
“Enough, damn it. We’re going to attract something. Use your Estingia power already and make the trap….”
It was our turn to act too.
By sheer chance, the girl guarding Karla had stopped right below me while I lay flat on the rock ledge above her.
I glanced back at Mikaela and made a subtle gesture. She understood right away.
She slowly crawled back from her spot, and I tightened my grip on the hilt of my sword.
My heart was pounding like a drum.
I had never killed anyone in cold blood before, and I admit my hand was trembling a little.
Defending yourself wasn’t the same as attacking with the intent to kill, but I knew very well there was no other way out.
Worse than that, my eyes drifted for one second toward the huge mouth of another cave opening near the gallery.
Something was hiding in those depths. Something we really shouldn’t provoke, and whatever we were going to do here had to be fast and lethal.
“Done. These are the limits. Don’t step inside the black mark!” one of the novice Estingias said after creating a kind of puddle on the ground, thick and dark, like melted pitch.
“Cut her some more. We need more blood to attract the beast, then throw her into the trap….”
She moved to make Karla bleed again while Karla fought like a madwoman, even though she was tied up well.
Then a presence burst into the cave, drawing their attention.

Chapter 165
“Why don’t I just cut off your heads and use you as bait instead, you damned witches?”
The three of them turned when Mika stepped out to pull their focus.
Karla started making muffled sounds, and I couldn’t tell whether they were joy or warning.

“So you managed to survive that demon tree and came straight to find us. Today really isn’t your lucky day, blondie.” The redhead laughed as she walked toward Mikaela with a threatening look and drew two daggers.
“Silvia, come with me!”
She called another girl over because apparently, she didn’t feel capable of facing Mikaela alone.
