We clashed with everything we had, and while Arlene tried to attack me from behind with her Estingia clone, my wolf covered every opening with teeth and claws.
My sword vibrated with a dangerous aura that kept driving her back. I had already opened several wounds on her.
“That idiot Morgan lied to me!” she shouted when Sonya sliced into her shoulder, so close to her throat it almost made her choke on the words.
Morgan had probably told her I’d walked out of the armory with the worst piece of junk available.
But even with the advantage of my sword, that shadow she controlled kept getting in the way. It blocked me, took the worst blows for Arlene, and I couldn’t keep fighting like that for much longer.
“And you haven’t even seen the best part,” I told her, making the final decision because my power was almost gone.
Estingia power rushed down my legs all at once, giving me a dizzying burst of speed as I launched myself forward with my wolf of scarlet mist.
Both of us went for Arlene, pretending to deliver the final blow, and my sword lit with that fire roaring from somewhere deep inside me.
My hair flashed with the magic crackling around me, and my Estingia seal bloomed through the grass from beneath my feet.
Arlene waited for me with her weapon ready, but I knew exactly what she would do. While she insulted me and basked in her own superiority, I had been reading her again and again, just like Blaze had taught me.
My magical wolf appeared behind her, and I struck from the front, aiming to break through her defense with my sword.
Her spear suddenly shattered into pieces when she tried to stop my charge, but a clever smile appeared on Arlene’s “frightened” face.
Then her body vanished again, erased into the mist.
“You shouldn’t have used all your power in one attack,” her mocking whisper floated through the air.
I knew she would appear near me again.
Behind me.
Ready to strike.
Since my wolf was no longer guarding against her clone, Arlene used that opening to switch places with her shadow again and give me the mortal wound.
But I still had one last trick.
“Sonya, do it now!” I shouted at my sword, sending the command as I exploded with every scrap of power I had left.
“Aahah!” A roar tore out of my throat, tasting of blood, but right in front of my eyes, the black blade lengthened and twisted, moving through the air like a flexible serpent made of steel.
Arlene never imagined my sword had that ability.

And when she appeared behind me, aiming that poisoned dagger at my neck, my sword had already wrapped around me and was going straight for her throat.
I couldn’t see her face, but I could smell her fear. Terror clung to her body like a second skin.
At the last second, I heard a scream, followed by an explosion of black mist that filled the whole clearing and blinded us for a few seconds.
My magic went out all at once, and I almost dropped to my knees.
I doubled over and vomited a little blood from the wounds weakening me and from pushing my Estingia magic too far
My sword had returned to its original shape, but it was covered in blood.
Footsteps rushed toward me, and before I could fall onto the grass, Mikaela and Karla caught me and held me up.
“Dora!”
“I’m fine, but don’t lower your guard….” I grabbed Mika by the arm, trying to turn around while that irritating mist began to thin.
It was another Estingia trick.
Something had happened.
“Where’s Morgan? Did you beat her? Tell me, Karla! What’s going on?”
“Look over there, Dora.” She pointed behind me, and I turned as if time had slowed around me. “She vanished right in front of us while we were fighting.”
I froze at the sight of Morgan thrown across the grass, bleeding out, her body jerking through choked spasms.
A horrible wound cut across her neck from one side to the other.
