ISIDORA
Luckily, none of the tragic scenes I had imagined came true, and when I saw the respect the Obsidian Master showed that old woman, my disbelief only kept growing.
Karla and Mikaela had the same what-the-hell-is-happening look on their faces that I probably had on mine
“Your Ladyship, we spoke very clearly about this impulsive behavior!” she snapped through her teeth, though she didn’ seem to have any intention of punishing her for snapping her fingers and murdering an Estingia.
“Impulsive? Not at all.” The platinum-haired Estingia made a small gesture, and the red-haired man behind her handed her a scroll.
My mouth twisted as I thought about all the times I had spoken so casually with those men, thinking they were special workers from the Greenhouse.
And they were her slaves! Who the hell had three damn slaves?!
“This is proof that the girl was a cheater and the real killer here.” She tossed the scroll into the air, and the Obsidian Master caught it, opening it to examine the contents.
By then, the stands were already buzzing, and every pair of eyes kept sliding toward the three of us.
I didn’t understand what everyone was losing their minds over.
She was a young, powerful Estingia who liked playing at being a harmless old woman… or maybe it was the other way around, and she was actually an old woman pretending to be young.
My head was already spinning, and I heard my friends whispering while the Master took her sweet time reading and rereading the scroll.
“Is that the famous Obsidian Estingia who doesn’t accept disciples, even though tons of women have begged her to take them?” Mika whispered to Karla.
Karla nodded.
“I suspected it when I saw her in the center seat…. She’s more important than the Obsidian Master. They say she doesn’t hold the position because she doesn’t want it….”
“That’s because she’s lazy,” I huffed and looked at her again.
She was watching me, taking those smug little drags from her pipe, and bandages or no bandages, that same superior mockery was still in her eyes.
Tsk. That old harpy.
“According to the confession of the woman involved, Estingia Arlene was the one who stole part of the terrain plans meant for the trial!” the Obsidian Master suddenly announced, giving a cold look to the corpse no one had bothered to remove.
“She bribed one of the assistants to obtain them, and that woman confessed under interrogation by Obsidian Estingia Legna” she added with a resigned sigh.
For betrayal and cheating, she is sentenced… to death.”
The sentence almost felt ironic, as if she were trying to recover a little dignity as the great Estingia Master when Arlene was obviously already dead.

She signaled for the body to be taken away, and all I could do was stare at the corpse of one of my enemies.
Dead just like that. I brought my eyes back to my new mentor.
I hadn’t been wrong to choose to stand at her side. That old woman was in another league, and I wanted to reach that level.
I also wanted to simply snap my fingers and have the world at my feet… to have him at my side.
I searched for him again in the stands, but I didn’t see him. Or at least, I thought I didn’t.
My vision was finally going blurry, and my legs couldn’t take any more.
“My disciples may withdraw and rest. I don’t need you here anymore,” my master’s voice suddenly rang out from above
We looked into her dark, confident eyes, and then she added.
“Well done… all three of you.”
I could almost hear Karla’s and Mika’s hearts thunder.
Mine did too, especially when applause began to echo around us, along with the warriors’ shouts.
We were the only team that had arrived complete and without stabbing one another in the back.
We walked to the front of the platform, down below, and with the last bit of strength I had left, I struck my closed fist against the left side of my chest in a warrior’s salute.
“I. Isidora Estingia, accept Obsidian Estingia Legna as my mentor and guide!” I shouted first.
“1. Karla Estingia, accept Obsidian Estingia Legna as my mentor and guide!”
“I. Mikaela Estingia, accept Obsidian Estingia Legna as my mentor and guide!”
“And I. Legna Voss, accept you as my disciples…..” she said, finally rising from her throne and stepping to the edge of the platform while she looked down at us with those cold eyes.
She opened her mouth, and for one second, I thought maybe we were about to earn another one of her strange compliments.
“May the Goddess have mercy on you.”
I almost coughed up blood right there, especially with the crowd trying to hide its laughter.
So typical of her.
Her generosity had run out.
But in the end, we had done it. Damn it, we had done it, and besides gaining a powerful guide, we had advanced in rank inside the Fortress.
The girls were euphoric as we left through one of the side corridors.
“I’m going to find Blaze….” I told them, falling a little behind.
