Chapter 196
ÍSIDORA
That day. Elessia came in with news that eased some of the tension.
There would be a proper ball that night, with both Light and Dark Estingias invited.
A ball I planned to attend… with my friends and no one else.

“You can stay in the room next door, the one meant for my slave. I don’t need you with me,” I told Blaze plainly, ignoring the cold edge in his expression.
He stayed right where he was, standing in the middle of the room like a mountain, as if he had no intention of moving. kept staring him down.
“Did I say something you didn’t understand?” I raised an eyebrow, catching Elessia twisting her skirt in her hands out of the corner of my eye.
I knew she was afraid of him.
“If that’s what my lady wants,” he muttered through clenched teeth.
Then he turned his back on me and walked out, leaving a trail of frost behind him.
The door slammed hard when he disappeared into the adjoining room.
“God… I don’t know how you managed to fall in love with that brute. He’s hot and all, but sometimes he scares me a little…”
“Forget Blaze. Let’s get ready. We’re going out,” I said, turning to her as the excitement lit up our eyes again.
We had never been to a ball like this before, with masks and everything. It was already exciting… but it got even better when one of the attendants led us to the doors of the enormous ballroom and I noticed something important.
There were male guests.
Of course. We weren’t on Estingia lands anymore, and there were plenty of men among the guests. Some of them were powerful Alphas who had come hunting for strong Estingias.
“Oh… looking like that, you’re going to steal a lot of hearts tonight,” Elessia whispered behind me, making me smile a little awkwardly.
I hadn’t come here looking for males. I just wanted to enjoy the night, and besides… I doubted many of them would even notice me.
I gathered the full skirt of the burgundy gown I’d had made a while ago.
I was glad I’d brought something elegant.
The square neckline showed off my breasts, and the fitted bodice defined my waist, which had grown slimmer and more toned with training.
My whole body was much thinner than when I first arrived at the Fortress. The truth was, I hadn’t been “fat” in a long time… but my mind still clung to some of those insecurities.
I stepped down in my elegant ankle boots, steady on my feet, feeling my loose red hair brush softly over my shoulders and
bare back.

The ruby necklace rested heavy against my pale throat, its cold stones brushing my skin with every movement.

1 had been so focused on not catching the hem of my dress and going tumbling down the stairs that when I finally reached the bottom and looked up, I froze.
Everyone was staring at me.
す
Hundreds of eyes behind all kinds of masks, like the black lace one I was wearing.
My cheeks burned, especially when I felt several males staring hard in my direction.
“Dora.”
Mika’s voice made me turn, and I let out a breath in relief.
Elessia and I walked over to where the others were.
“Didn’t you say no one would look at you?” Elessia leaned in, her voice low enough for the music to cover it. “Every man in the room turned to stare at you…”
“You’re exaggerating.” I huffed, refusing to buy into that.
The noise of conversation swelled again as people gathered in small groups, attendants moving through the room with trays! of drinks.
“Dora, you look… wow. You’re beautiful, my friend…” Mika, dressed in turquoise, looked me up and down with shining eyes.
Beside her, Karla, in a deep blue that was almost black, nodded in agreement.
“I’ve got a feeling you’ll be breaking a lot of hearts tonight.”
“That’s what I told her,” Elessia added, and the two of them started teasing me.
I ignored them, mostly because I could feel the weight of
ne’s stare.
I scanned the massive ballroom, elegant to an almost unreal degree, with a high ceiling and chandeliers hanging like falling tears, tall white marble columns rising all around us.
I couldn’t find the source of that… powerful gaze.
But I did find another piece of vermin glaring at me from among the Light Estingias.
Marion.
If hate alone could kill, I’d have been foaming at the mouth by now.
Screw her. Let her choke on her own envy. Let her see she wasn’t the only one wearing expensive dresses and fine jewelry
anymore.
Suddenly, the mood in the room shifted.
Everything went quiet. The music stopped, and every face turned toward the top of the entrance staircase.
I did the same.
And there she was.
The woman who had given me the chance to go to the Estingia Fortress.
