Chapter 197
Chapter 197
ISIDORA
Three men stood in front of me, each one staring more intensely than the last.
My heart was pounding from nerves. I wasn’t used to getting this much attention.
“Let me lead, Lady Isidora. I’m an excellent dancer…”
“Please. How dare you lie to such a powerful Estingia? Everyone knows you have two left feet.”
“Idiot!”

I might’ve laughed at the two males arguing if the third hadn’t taken advantage of their distraction, grabbed my hand, and pulled me away.
I tried to resist his grip and looked at the girls for help, but Mika and Elessia were laughing at my situation while Karla only winked at me.
“Damn traitors.”
“Am I making you uncomfortable? Forgive my boldness, but I couldn’t help myself.”
The blond man turned to face me. His hair was slicked back, and his striking sky–blue eyes stood out beneath his mask.
He was handsome. I had to admit, and we were standing in the middle of the dance floor, blocking the other couples.
“Shall we dance, Lady Isidora?” He held out his hand, saying my name as if we were already familiar with each other.
Someone behind me cleared their throat, waiting for us to move so they could reach the center of the ballroom.
Cornered by the situation, and curious to experience something I’d never done before, I held out my hand too.
His name was Michael, Alpha of the Iron Pack. I learned that between one turn and the next.
I kept stepping on his feet with my boot, and my cheeks grew redder with embarrassment every time.
“I told you I didn’t know how to dance…”
“And I told you I was willing to teach you.” He smiled down at me. “Besides, if I get to see that adorable blush, I’m willing to Jose every toe I have.”
An awkward smile appeared on my lips in answer to his dazzling one.
I wasn’t used to such shameless flirting, but who didn’t like feeling wanted? Feeling beautiful?
Under the warm lights, I danced for the first time in the arms of a man who treated me with respect.
He wanted something from me, I knew that, but somehow, I’d caught his attention.
His… and that of many others who came over to ask me to dance.
I heard the Estingias whispering, especially the Light Estingias, talking about my expensive jewelry and the luxurious gown made from the finest fabrics.
Envy hung in the air, and it felt good.

The fat little girl who used to clean up their filth now had what so many of them coveted.

I finally excused myself from the son of one of the Alphas. My feet hurt, and so did my cheeks from smiling so much.
I managed to slip away toward a quieter corridor leading to the garden.
I’d find the girls again later in the crowd, but right then, I was afraid someone else might ask me to dance.
I walked down the dark corridor, feeling the breeze drifting in from the garden and wanting to take a walk alone, when a small stone wedged itself into the tread of my boot.
It was tiny, but every step felt as if I were walking on top of a mountain.
“Damn it,” I muttered.
I lifted my skirt above my ankles and tried to bend as far as the tight corset would allow, but the whole maneuver was nearly impossible.
Then, in the blink of an eye, a blond head appeared in front of me.
Michael had followed me without making a sound, and now he was kneeling to clean the sole of my boot.
“Wait. You don’t have to do that…”
“It’s my pleasure to help you. It’ll only take a second.”
His firm hand closed around my ankle as he placed my foot on his raised knee.
I didn’t know how to handle that much attention, especially when the hand around my ankle began sliding suggestively over the top of my tall leather boot.
He flicked the troublesome stone away.
“There. Though it did give me an excuse to touch Your Ladyship…”
“Alpha…”
“I don’t want to make you uncomfortable, Lady Isidora. I only want you to give me a chance… to let us get to know each other. From the moment you came down those stairs… Goddess, I haven’t been able to look at another woman in that ballroom.”
He started pouring his heart out with the ease of a man who clearly knew exactly what to say.
Under different circumstances, his smooth words might’ve made my heart flutter.
But right then, I was frozen.
Petrified by the danger he still hadn’t sensed.
I lifted my head toward the shadowed space beneath a staircase I hadn’t noticed before.
All I could see was a pair of red eyes.
The darkness hid the rest of him, but I knew exactly which beast had been watching us from the shadows.
And now he was coming toward us with murder in every step, no longer bothering to hide his intentions.
Michael finally sensed him too.

“What the hell?”
He shot to his feet, bared his canines, and spun around.
Too late.
In a single breath, Blaze was on him.

He backhanded Michael across the face like a wild animal, hitting him hard enough to send the Alpha crashing into one of the corridor’s columns.
His aura was so dangerous that it frightened even me.
He looked at me with wolfish eyes full of accusation and jealousy, then turned toward Michael, who groaned as he tried to get back on his feet.
Blaze wasn’t going to let him leave.
I knew it the moment he lunged at the male again, his enormous claws extended and aimed straight at his throat.
“NO! STOP! THAT’S AN ORDER!”
I roared and ran faster than I ever had before.
I acted on instinct and shoved Blaze with all my strength.
I didn’t know whether I’d caught him off guard or whether I really had grown that much stronger.
Somehow, I managed to put myself between the dazed male and my slave, who was one breath away from losing control completely.
“Enough! I said that’s enough!”
I shouted when Blaze leaned toward me and roared directly into my face.
Goddess, I almost backed away.
But he was my Blaze, and deep in my heart, I knew he would never hurt me.
“Nothing happened. I don’t like this male. He means nothing to me.”
“Lady Isidora…”
“Get up and get the fuck out of here unless you want to die!”
I shouted without looking back, feeling Blaze’s massive body surging forward while I pressed both hands against his chest and held him tightly against me.
At last, that idiot’s survival instincts kicked in.
I heard him scramble to his feet.
Blaze kept snarling over my shoulder, the sounds more wolf than man, until Michael finally ran.
“Calm down. Just calm down… Wait. Where are you taking me? Wait!”
Blaze threw me over his shoulder, and the world spun around me as he carried me off like a savage dragging a woman back to his cave.

Chapter 197
I didn’t want to cause an even bigger scene or push him any further.
Something along the side of his neck brushed against me, and I was almost sure it was fur.
His wolf was about to come out.
Every instinct I had told me that wasn’t a good thing.

He carried me up the narrow stairs to the floor above. When we reached a small upper gallery, he lowered me to the floor.
“Blaze, control yourself. You’re scaring me. Nothing happened between that man and me…”
I started backing away, surrounded by darkness.
Heavy curtains hung behind me, but I could still see him through the thin strip of light slipping in through a gap.
A wall stopped my retreat.
There was nowhere left to go, and the pain and fury twisting Blaze’s face were only inches from mine.
He’d ripped off his muzzle.
“You have no right to question me. I’m free. You never…”
I didn’t even get to finish the sentence.
He grabbed my arm hard and spun me around, forcing me to look through the curtains.
His fingers locked around my chin in a brutal grip.
The entire ballroom spread out below us from that small hidden gallery. From there, he’d seen every move I’d made. Everything I’d done.
“I saw it all. Every man you smiled at. Every man you let touch you and try to win you over.” His breath burned against my ear. “Did you enjoy feeling desired? Did you like the disgusting scent rolling off them while they stared at your breasts? Did you imagine fucking any of them?”
