My wolf turned her head, and through her eyes, I saw my best friend step out of the old lakeside cabin.

She pulled the rag out of her mouth, but her hands were still tied in front of her.

Had Marion been holding Elessia captive? We’d been so lost in our rage that we hadn’t even sensed her.

Varka finally climbed off her mate and walked toward Elessia without so much as glancing back at Blaze.

My friend froze when the massive she-wolf approached.

Varka was so tall that her head almost reached Elessia’s face, and even though Elessia clearly recognized us, fear still flashed in her eyes.

“She won’t hurt you, Ele… this is my wolf, Varka,” I said, speaking directly into her mind for the first time.

I could finally use one of my kind’s abilities.

Varka slowly brought her muzzle closer and sniffed her while Elessia stood stiff as a board.

The blood still smeared over my wolf’s teeth and fur probably wasn’t helping.

Then Varka lowered her head and started gnawing through the rope tied tightly around Elessia’s wrists.

“Don’t worry, little wolf… I can do it.”

But Varka didn’t stop.

I could feel how grateful she was to Elessia and her inner wolf.

She’d taken care of me all these years, and by doing that, she’d cared for Varka too.

When the rope finally fell to the ground, my wolf gently licked the bruises around her wrists.

Damn Marion. But she was already dead, so I couldn’t make her pay again for what she’d done.

“I’m fine… I’m just happy you were finally able to break free.”

Elessia reached out and cautiously stroked one of Varka’s ears. My wolf raised her head and looked into her gentle eyes.

“No one will ever hurt you again.”Varka made that promise to the wolf inside Elessia.

She was only a small Omega who’d gotten used to keeping her head down and serving while others mistreated her.

We had no idea how soon we’d have to keep that promise.

“Thank you.” Ele lowered her gaze.

Tears clung to her lashes, but she quickly wiped them away.

“He came to rescue me. He was arguing with Marion… Marion…”

The words died in her throat when she noticed my former mistress’s body lying on the shore, still bleeding.

Her eyes widened, and both hands flew to her mouth.

“Oh, Goddess… we have to get rid of the evidence! No one can know what you did…” That was her first reaction.

As always, she didn’t judge me or blame me for the mess.

She rushed toward the body while Blaze stood a few feet away without saying a word.

“What are you waiting for? We have to bury her in the woods! No one can tie this to Dora!” she shouted at him, ignoring the fear she’d always felt around him.

Varka looked back at her mate, torn.

“Shift.”

“No… wait. Someone’s watching us.” Varka’s warning came too late.

When she turned toward the woods, I saw a woman step out of the darkness, and my blood ran cold.

There was no way to hide any of this now.

“Dora, what are you waiting for? We have to do something now!”

“She’s waiting for my verdict.”

The matriarch answered Elessia’s panicked shout.

Everything seemed to slow down as my friend turned toward her, eyes widening when she recognized that voice.

Varka moved closer to Elessia and Blaze, putting herself between them and the matriarch.

“Oh, Goddess…” I heard my friend whisper, but my eyes remained fixed on that woman.

“Marion tried to kidnap my squire. She attacked my slave. I had to kill her to protect my own,” I said firmly into the matriarch’s mind.

“To protect your own… or to protect your lover?” Her crooked smile was full of contempt.

So much for the kind, generous matriarch.

“If you’re going to blame someone, blame me. I’ll give up my position and turn myself in to the palace. I’ll

accept whatever punishment they give me…”

“Wait. Who said anything about punishing you, my dear Isidora?”

She came closer and stopped several feet in front of Varka, who watched her every move.

guess you didn’t believe me when I told you I could make things much easier for you if you sided with me. I even helped you win the competition and free your wolf…”

“I did that all on my own, and now I see what happens to Estingians who make deals with you.” My eyes shifted toward Marion.

The smug smile vanished from her face.

“I see being nice doesn’t work with you… so I guess I’ll have to show you my uglier side… I want to offer you a deal.”

Those words made me tense up, and what came next changed everything.

“I want you to use Legna’s trust in you to kill her.”

“NO!”

I roared, and Varka bared her fangs at the matriarch. The woman didn’t even flinch.

“I think you’ve mistaken this for a suggestion.”

The moment she finished speaking, she snapped her fingers.

“Aaah!” Elessia collapsed, clutching her throat, her face twisted in agony.

“What are you doing to her?! Let her go! She hasn’t done anything!”

I roared as I tried to help my friend.

She dropped to the ground, convulsing and making horrible choking sounds as if invisible hands were strangling her.

Blaze stood beside her with the same calm expression on his face, and it only made me angrier.

“Stop standing there like an idiot and help her!” I yelled at him, torn between attacking the matriarch and trying to help Elessia.

Maybe by using Blaze’s strength too…

“He can’t help her. Only you can.”

“I’ll do what you want, but let her go! Let her go, you fucking…!”

Elessia’s skin was already turning purple, and her eyes were bulging.

The matriarch snapped her fingers again and, just like that, Elessia could breathe.

She sucked in a ragged breath, then coughed until the color slowly returned to her face.

Only then did Blaze move.

He patted her back before carefully lifting her off the hard river stones.

Watching them in the moonlight, I realized just how tightly the matriarch had me by the ovaries.

She’d found my two weaknesses.

“I think you understand now. This can end very well for you… or very badly. Estingians are valuable resources, but what do you think will happen to a mere slave and a servant if they’re linked to the murder of an Estingian from a powerful family like Marion’s?”

“Don’t touch them.” Varka growled at her, barely holding back her rage.

We still weren’t strong enough to face the matriarch.

Otherwise, we’d already be fighting her.

I had to be smart. I had to keep a clear head.

“I’ll do what you want… I have no other choice.”

“And I hope you remember that every time the thought of betraying me crosses your mind. One snap of my fingers, and the spell inside your servant’s body will strangle her all over again.”

She stepped closer until her face was only inches from Varka’s muzzle.

She was perfectly calm, completely sure of her

power.

“And don’t think I won’t find out if you betray me, dear. Believe me when I tell you that if you warn Legna…

I’ll know.”

“I won’t forget,” I forced out through clenched teeth.

I knew she wasn’t bluffing.

“Then you have one day to do it. Here. I don’t want Legna returning to the Estingian Pack.”

That was her verdict, and then she unleashed the full force of her aura on me, making the warning perfectly clear.

Once she was satisfied that her plan had worked, she left the same way she’d come.

I was sure she’d used Marion to kidnap Elessia and plant something inside her body.

She knew I would lose control if I saw Marion flirting with my slave.

She’d studied me, set her trap, and I’d walked straight into it.

That woman was a manipulative, dangerous harpy.

“We can’t do this… we can’t kill the Obsidian Estingian,” Varka said through clenched teeth.

“And we won’t. But we have to outsmart that woman. We need to give Legna a strong enough reason to strike first without telling her the truth.”

Varka looked back at Blaze, who was still standing on the shore with Elessia in his arms.

I couldn’t lose either of them. No matter what.

I couldn’t kill the matriarch myself… but I knew someone who could.
