ISIDORA

I left Elessia asleep in my bed.

The thought of leaving her alone terrified me now, and I couldn’t tell my other friends what had happened.

Karla was still taking care of Mika, and tomorrow she’d have one final fight to see whether she could finally qualify.

I pulled the blanket higher over Elessia, brushed a hand over her forehead, and sighed before crossing the dark room toward the small terrace.

He was standing out there with his back to me, staring at the snow-covered mountains.

I stepped outside without caring about the bitter cold.

“How long have you known I was your mate?” I asked outright.

Blaze slowly turned toward me.

He wasn’t wearing the muzzle he wore around everyone else, and I stared straight into his handsome, painfully serious face.

“I’ve suspected it for a long time…”

“How long…?!” I caught myself and lowered my voice so I wouldn’t wake Elessia. “How long, Blaze?”

“Does the exact date really matter? Would knowing it make me a better mate for you?”

His voice was colder than the storm raging around us.

I stared at him, thinking of all the things I wanted to say, but I was tired of going in circles. Tired of begging for his love.

“You’re right… none of it matters anymore.”

My voice came out just as cold as his, even with all the pain behind it.

“Once I’ve dealt with what matters most right now, I’ll give you the answer you want.”

My heart felt like it was bleeding, but his blank expression was slowly hardening something inside me.

“When we met, I made a deal with you. If you behaved and gave me your power, I would set you free… and I think it’s time I kept my word.”

I lifted my chin as the knot in my throat tightened.

“I can’t risk breaking the bond and weakening myself right now… but you don’t have to return to the Estingian

Tower with me if you don’t want to.”

I waited for his answer, for any reaction at all.

I wanted him to tell me he didn’t want his freedom.

That he wanted to be my mate for real.

But nothing came.

The man I’d given everything to didn’t say a word.

His silence told me everything I needed to know, and somehow, that hurt more than anything he could’ve said.

“I see…” I gave him a humorless smile. “If you have nothing to say, then keep watch outside the door so we can sleep safely.”

I turned back toward the mountains as he came closer.

For one second, our shoulders almost brushed, and our breaths clouded the same patch of air.

Then he walked past me.

With every step Blaze took, the distance between us grew, and I knew I couldn’t cross it

I leaned against the railing and clenched my fists.

My claws slid out, carving marks into the stone.

anymore.

The bedroom door closed behind him, and I stayed there, staring at nothing while tears rolled down my frozen cheeks, one after another, refusing to stop.

Eventually, I wiped them away, angry that I was still hurting this much.

“If I’m not enough for any man, then I’ll be enough for myself.”

I lifted my chin and held on to that decision with everything I had.

“You don’t need him the way you did at the beginning. I’m strong now, and we can use a different slave. I’ll survive his rejection when it comes. I don’t want a mate who looks down on me.”

Varka growled inside my mind, filling me with her strength.

For the first time, I truly felt powerful.

She was right. I wasn’t alone anymore. I had her now, and I had a new reason to keep going.

I wouldn’t let anyone else control my actions or decide my fate. Not Blaze, and definitely not that harpy of a matriarch.

“We need to find a way out of this. Tomorrow, I have to warn Legna.”

I didn’t know how I was going to do it, but the ceremony the following day gave me exactly the opening I needed.

At last, I learned the true identity of that mysterious old woman.
