It had Isidora’s red curls, but when it lifted its head, ruby–red eyes stared back at us as a cold, unnatural laugh came from its mouth.
That wasn’t her… Someone had taken my mate. Someone had stolen her right out of my arms!
“Get away from me, you damned thing!” Soul roared and threw it away.
A scream ripped through the clearing as the thing crashed hard against the ground several yards away rolled to a stop.
He looked around desperately.

She must’ve fallen somewhere along the way. She had to be terrified.
Those things could hurt her, no matter how powerful Isidora was.
But when I tried to take a step, something grabbed Soul’s legs.
It was that false imitation again.
“It’s me, Blaze! It’s me… wake up!”
It kept screaming, but its face was still twisted into that horrible grin, and its eyes were still filled with malice.
“Stop pretending to be my mate! What did you do to her?! Where’s Isidora? Where is she?!”
Soul roared in fury and lunged at the puppet.
He slashed its arm with his claws and heard it scream in Isidora’s voice.
“Wake up! It’s me, my love! It’s me!”
For one second, it really was her voice. I swear it sounded exactly like her, but her scent was disappearing beneath the rotten stench of those damned shadows.
And when it lunged at Soul again, its face was gone.
It was as if the thing couldn’t decide what face to wear.
I couldn’t even remember why I was fighting anymore. All I knew was that I was looking for someone… and that thing was my enemy.

Soul roared when he felt a powerful attack coming straight at him, red streaks flashing through the darkness.
He raised one hand to block it and knocked the thing away at the same time, sending it flying several yards before it slammed into a tree trunk.
We wouldn’t give it a chance to get back up.
He charged at the creature, planted one foot on it, and pinned it to the ground beneath his full weight.
He looked down at the faceless shadow and raised his claws beneath the moonlight.
“This is the end of you.” He bellowed and bent over it, consumed by blind rage.
Dark, empty spaces swallowed our mind, along with a helpless fury we couldn’t control.
But then sanity hit me for one brief second, and I saw the horrible truth of what my wolf was about to do.
“STOP, SOUL! DAMN IT, STOP! WE’RE BEING TRICKED! STOP!”
I roared at him, but he couldn’t hear me.
Even our connection was fading. We kept losing each other for longer and longer as the curse grew stronger.
I screamed inside his mind until I thought I would break apart.
I fought like a madman to take control… I couldn’t let him do it. If he did, it would drive us insane for good.
My Isidora…
Just as he was about to tear into her with a fatal blow, she managed to throw something into Soul’s open jaws.
It burst against his tongue.
The taste was so bitter that it shocked his entire mind, clearing the fog for one second.
“WAKE UP OR YOU’RE GOING TO MURDER OUR MATE!”
At last, I managed to force the words through to him.
His eyes stopped darting around, and he stared in horror at what we were doing.
Pinned beneath his enormous paw, crushed under our weight, wasn’t one of those shadow creatures.
It was the real Isidora.
She had never left our side.
Her face was covered in blood, and she was choking, unable to breathe, her red hair spread across the blood- soaked grass beneath her.

My wolf’s claws were still dripping with her blood, frozen only inches from her face.
“No… No!”

Soul roared and stumbled back, staring at her without understanding how any of this had happened.
