The Last Lycan King Is My Slave

The Regent Is My Mate

ISIDORA

“No. We won’t, I’m with you. I’m always with you.” My wolf’s voice echoed inside my head.

She was right. I had her now:

“Fine. I’ll behave…” I lied, and I felt terrible about it. But I held Elessia’s hand and gave it a squeeze.

“Besides, I can’t let you become some rich lady living off my entire inheritance.”

“Pfft. I’d give up every piece of gold for you, and you know it…” She walked toward the basin of water she’d left on the floor.

“I know. I know you’d give up everything you own for me, and I’d give my life for you. I just hope you can forgive me if the worst happens.”

“Now that you’re awake, take a proper bath. You have to attend a dinner they’re holding for all the Estingias…” I thought.

She headed toward a door on the other side of the room, which I assumed led to a bathroom.

I looked at her small frame and the brown hair pulled into the same braid she always wore.

Of course, if anything happened to me, I would leave everything to her. Legna would protect her in the tower. I knew she would.

I was being selfish again, twisting the truth… just like Blaze had done to me.

But I was desperate… just as desperate as he must’ve been so many times.

I was sorry for what I was doing to my friend, but I couldn’t abandon him.

Now that I was inside the royal palace, it was time to find the missing pages from /Valezka’s journal.

That night, I dressed in a mix of leather and fabric.

Tight pants, a corset, and an elegant top with several long, deeply slit panels falling from it like a skirt.

It was feminine and masculine at once. Elegant and powerful.

My hair was pinned in a high updo, with a few red strands falling loose around my neck and shoulders.

Then I headed toward the dining hall, my steps firm.

Elessia followed behind me as always, but I desperately missed that/sharp presence and intimidating shadow that used to make me feel protected.

“This way to the hall, my lady.”

One of the servants guided us through hallways filled with impressive paintings, delicate vases, and stained-glass windows overlooking the landscape outside.

Far below, the sea crashed against the cliffs, and a forest stretched out like the castle’s own private garden.

It was breathtaking and oppressive at the same time.

No matter how much luxury surrounded us, the gray stone walls still made me feel so small.

We reached a set of open double doors, and soft music drifted from inside.

“Please go in, my lady. Dinner will be served shortly…” He bowed, just like every other person we’d passed along the way

Honestly, I wasn’t used to having everyone bow to me.

I stepped through the double doors. Dim, warm light filled the room.

It was a large open hall without chairs or long dining tables.

It looked more like a reception room, with a few appetizers laid out and a group of nervous Estingias waiting around.

The moment I walked in, I realized how completely out of place I looked, even though I’d thought I was dressed elegantly enough.

“I told you this wasn’t a combat mission…” Elessia muttered under her breath.

“As long as you look pretty enough for both of us, we’ll be fine,” I replied, not caring much about it.

She was wearing a navy-blue dress with detailing across the bodice and puffed sleeves.

The other squires were always jealous of her.

I knew their mistresses didn’t treat them nearly as well, but there was nothing we could do about that.

I walked toward a quiet corner of the room.

I didn’t approach anyone, and no one approached me.

We were all supposed to be competitors here. Or at least they were.

I had no interest in competing for the regent’s favor.

I wasn’t staying in this palace and pretending to serve a king who wasn’t even here.

“What’s wrong?” Elessia suddenly grabbed my hand and squeezed hard.

When I looked at her, I was startled by how pale her face had become.

Her honey-colored eyes were fixed on a balcony high above us that I hadn’t noticed before.

Heavy curtains concealed it, but now I could feel a presence there.

Someone was watching us.

“It can’t… be…” she stammered, swallowing hard.

“You’re making me nervous. What’s wrong?”
