The Last Lycan King Is My Slave novel Chapter 239

Inside the Lycan King’s Bedroom

ISIDORA

“What?”

My question came out a little louder than I meant it to.

But they were all so tense, staring at the Regent, that no one noticed anything strange going on over here.

“He’s my mate,” she repeated, lowering her head as she clasped her hands tightly in front of her.

Fuck, were we really both going to have such shitty luck with our fated mates?

“Well…” I didn’t know what to say to make her feel better as I looked back up at the curtains.

The Regent had gone back to his seat of power, the chair that might belong to the next King if I couldn’t save Vhaelor.

Without a lycan to bear the weight of the crown, the Alphas from the other branches of the royal family would definitely be next in line to rule.

And the leading candidate was the man who would break my best friend’s heart.

We both knew it. He’d never accept a mere squire.

No matter how much of my fortune I shared with her or how much I supported her, it wouldn’t change where she came from.

“Maybe he hasn’t noticed. Maybe we can… Ele…”

Before I could grab her, she slipped away and fled the hall.

I wanted to go after her and comfort her, though I honestly had no idea where to even start.

But a maid stopped me.

“My lady, you’ve been invited to a private dinner for the Estingias who pleased the Regent most…

She said it with a respectful bow, trying to lead me toward one side of the ballroom.

So many eyes were fixed on me, full of jealousy and even hatred.

The selection had started the moment we walked through the door, and fists or brute strength weren’t enough here.

“Thank you… but I have to pass.”

“What?” The woman looked up in surprise, but I’d already turned and was heading after Elessia.

Like I said, I had no intention of playing this ridiculous game.

My dream wasn’t to become an Estingia in the royal guard anymore, but to save the true King.

“Find Elessia,” I asked Vaska, since I’d wandered into a strange maze of hallways.

Actually, I found it odd that there weren’t any guards, or anyone at all watching over this suspiciously empty wing.

The farther I went, the fewer paintings and decorations there were.

The carpet grew darker, and so did the woodwork and curtains.

If the castle had felt oppressive before, the air around me was suffocating now. But that was exactly what made my heart pound like crazy.

“I can’t serise Ele, but I can smell my mate. His scent is really strong. I think we’re getting close to his quarters.”

Vaska’s excited voice echoed through my mind, and the temptation to follow his scent grew even stronger.

I was moving deeper into the heart of the castle, into its most forbidden area, with no one there to stop me.

It did seem a little suspicious, but curiosity got the better of me.

I reached a pair of double doors made of solid wood, with wolves carved into them.

They looked impossible to open, but all I had to do was give them a small push, and they gave way with a low creak.

I glanced back at the empty hallway, then slipped through the opening.

His scent hit me right in the face, like a wild forest warmed by the sun.

I stopped in the doorway, closed my eyes, and breathed him in like an addict who’d just found her favorite drug.

This was his private space. His powerful aura still clung to everything.

I opened my eyes again and made out the shapes of the furniture. Moonlight spilled in through a set of doors that seemed to lead out to a terrace,

But the room farther inside caught my attention, and my feet carried me through the darkness and into his bedroom.

It was huge, just like him. The bed was so big I could’ve rolled from one side to the other without any trouble.

I pictured him asleep on the black silk sheets, his strong body completely naked.

“He’d better not have brought a lover in here,” my wolf snorted.

I just sighed as I walked over to one of the nightstands and looked at the ordinary things he’d left behind.

A worn book he’d been reading. A few half-burned candles. A quill beside an inkwell where the ink had dried up.

I ran my hands over his pillow, then pulled it into my arms as if I were hugging him.

I buried my face in it, breathing in his scent, and once again, that emptiness in my chest hurt too damn much.

Outside, the night wore on, and I wondered where my mate had gone.,

I needed to hurry. Something told me I was running out of time.

As if to confirm it, a sudden crash made me jump.

I looked toward the antechamber, where a gust of wind had blown in.

I left Vhaelor’s things behind and went to see what had made the noise.

The terrace doors were wide open, slamming back and forth.

The sight was a little creepy.

I went to close them, but the moonlight revealed á portrait of a woman on the wall.

I moved closer, forgetting everything else.

She was beautiful, with brown hair and eyes painted a deep, golden amber. Beautiful eyes… just like Blaze’s.
